Biography

Short Description

Wulflaich, known in French as Walfroy and in Latin sources as Wulfilaicus or Vulfilaic, was a sixth-century Lombard cleric who lived as a deacon, stylite, and monastic founder in the Ardennes, in the Frankish territory of Trier. Almost everything that can be said of him with confidence derives from Gregory of Tours, who visited Wulflaich at his monastery and devoted a substantial chapter of the Historia Francorum (Book VIII, chapter 15) to the hermit’s own recollection of his life. Gregory presents him as a Lombard by birth who, in youth, was moved by reports of the miracles of Saint Martin of Tours. He received the clerical tonsure, entered the service of the Church, and associated himself with Aredius (Saint Yrieix), the influential abbot of Limoges, before making his way north into the diocese of Trier.

He established himself on a hill near the castrum of Yvois (classical Eposium; later Yvois, now Carignan in the French Ardennes), a district where rustic pagan practice had not died out. Gregory records that a statue of the goddess Diana still stood on the height and that the local people brought offerings and held celebrations in her honour. Wulflaich preached against this cult and, taking the Syrian saint Simeon Stylites as his model, had a column raised and lived upon it as a stylite. He remained exposed through the winters of northern Gaul; ice formed in his beard and his feet were frostbitten so severely that his toenails came away. From the pillar he continued to exhort the countryside to abandon idolatry, and in time the statue of Diana was thrown down and destroyed.

The episcopate of the region, including Magneric, bishop of Trier, regarded the stylite vocation as foreign to the West and as too harsh for the Gallic climate. They required Wulflaich to come down from the column and saw to it that the pillar was demolished so that he could not resume that life. He submitted to their judgment. Thereafter he lived as a hermit and the head of a small monastic community, building an oratory dedicated to Saint Martin and gathering disciples around him. It was in this later, more conventional monastic setting that Gregory of Tours met him, probably in the mid-580s, and heard the story that he later wrote down.

No contemporary source records the year of Wulflaich’s birth or death. He was still alive when Gregory visited him and is generally thought to have died at his hermitage near Yvois toward the close of the sixth century. A local cult formed around the site, which came to be called Mont Saint-Walfroy, in what is now the commune of Margut in the Ardennes. A chapel and pilgrimage have long marked the hill, and he is commemorated locally, commonly on 21 October. Outside Gregory’s narrative, early independent documentation is very limited; later medieval and modern elaborations of his legend should be treated with caution.
