Biography

Short Description

Walaric (also known as Valery, Walric, or Walaricus) was a Frankish monk and missionary abbot of the late sixth and early seventh centuries. Medieval hagiography, above all an eleventh-century Life composed at his own monastery, states that he was born in the Auvergne of a humble family and spent his boyhood as a shepherd. Seeking learning, he obtained the rudiments of letters and entered monastic life. Tradition links him first with Autun and with the monastery of Saint Germanus at Auxerre before he joined the Irish-founded house of Luxeuil in the Vosges, then under Saint Columbanus. After Columbanus was expelled from Burgundy around 610, Walaric remained at Luxeuil under Abbot Eustasius and gained a reputation for austerity, humility, and miracles of healing.

When Chlothar II had united the Frankish kingdoms, he summoned monks from Luxeuil to work in Neustria. Walaric and a companion named Waldolanus were sent to the coastal district of Ponthieu. They settled at Leuconay (Leuconaus), at the mouth of the Somme, a site described as wild or formerly given to pagan cult. There Walaric founded a monastery, preached to the local people, and, according to his Life, converted many. The community followed the severe Columbanian observance he had known at Luxeuil. The foundation is usually placed in the second decade of the seventh century, after 613.

Walaric died at Leuconay on 12 December. Standard reference works give the year as 622, though some traditions prefer 619; no strictly contemporary chronicle records it. He was buried in his monastery, which later took his name and is the origin of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage and a cult grew in Picardy. The abbey suffered in the ninth-century Viking raids and was later restored. In 1066 William of Normandy assembled his fleet at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme; Norman historians relate that he invoked Saint Valery for a wind to sail to England, had the relics carried in procession, and attributed the change of weather to the abbot's intercession.

Because Walaric lived before centralized papal canonization, his sainthood is of the pre-congregation type, grounded in local veneration and later martyrological entry. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 12 December; some calendars also keep 1 April. He is honoured as founder-abbot of Leuconay and patron of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. The surviving Life is late and conventional, so many personal details cannot be confirmed independently, but his role as a Luxeuil monk who planted Columbanian monasticism on the Somme estuary fits the wider history of seventh-century Frankish monastic expansion.
