Short Description

Saint Walstan, often called Walstan of Bawburgh, is an English saint of the late Anglo-Saxon period whose historical footprint is almost entirely that of a later medieval cult rather than of contemporary chronicle. No eleventh-century document names him. What is known of his story comes from hagiographical lives written centuries afterwards, principally a Latin prose life and a Middle English verse life surviving in fifteenth-century manuscripts, together with liturgical commemorations and the folklore of his shrine and wells in Norfolk. Those lives present him as a man of high, even royal, birth, born at Blythburgh in Suffolk, who at about the age of twelve abandoned wealth and family in order to serve God as a hired farm labourer in Norfolk. Tradition dates his death to 1016. He is said to have worked especially at Taverham and to have been connected also with Costessey, living on the wages of ordinary agricultural work, giving surplus to the poor, and remaining unmarried.

The legend emphasises humility and the sanctification of rural labour. Walstan is described as combining the heaviest farm tasks with prayer, fasting, and charity. His employer is said to have held him in high regard; in some versions the farmer's wife sought to bind him to the household by marriage, which he refused in order to keep a life of chastity. Foreseeing his death, he asked that his corpse be laid on a wagon drawn by two white oxen or untrained calves and that he be buried wherever the animals halted. On 30 May, according to the same tradition, he died in the hayfields at Taverham. The oxen then took the body by a route that passed Costessey, where a spring is said to have risen, and came to rest at Bawburgh. Another well sprang up at the resting place or at the site of burial. He was interred at Bawburgh, and the parish church there came to be dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Walstan.

The shrine at Bawburgh and the associated wells became the focus of a regional pilgrimage in the later Middle Ages. Pilgrims sought healing for themselves and for livestock, especially in cases of lameness and fever, and medieval wills and offerings attest to the cult's local importance in Norfolk. Walstan is unusual among English saints in that his legend never makes him a bishop, abbot, or monk; he remains a lay farm worker, which explains his later patronage of farmers, farm labourers, husbandmen, and agricultural work. The shrine was dismantled at the Reformation, like other English pilgrimage centres, but the wells and the folk memory of the saint persisted in the district. Antiquarian writers of the early modern period still recorded the legend and the reputation of the water.

In modern times Walstan's feast has continued to be observed on 30 May, and he is invoked as patron of farms and of those who work the land. Historians treat the royal parentage, the precise itinerary of the oxen, and many biographical particulars as unverifiable legendary embroidery, while recognising that a genuine medieval cult of a holy labourer named Walstan was established at Bawburgh and that the associated wells were real features of Norfolk's sacred landscape. He remains one of the few English saints whose popular identity is bound to ordinary agricultural life rather than to court, cloister, or cathedral.
