Biography

Short Description

Walter of Pontoise, known in French as Gautier (also Gaultier or Gaucher) de Pontoise, was a Benedictine monk and abbot in northern France in the second half of the eleventh century. He was born at Andainville in Picardy. Surviving medieval notices do not record a precise year of birth; later tradition places it in the early eleventh century. After studying at more than one school he taught philosophy and rhetoric and acquired a reputation for learning. Only thereafter did he abandon secular life. The names of his teachers and the exact places where he taught are not securely documented, and the principal accounts of his life are monastic and hagiographical rather than contemporary administrative records.

He entered the Benedictine abbey of Rebais in the diocese of Meaux. In the reign of King Philip I of France he was appointed, against his own inclination, abbot of the monastery of Saint-Martin at Pontoise, a house that had been restored in the later eleventh century. The charge required him not only to direct the spiritual life of the monks but also to defend the community’s property and privileges at a time when royal and noble interference in ecclesiastical estates was common. Walter found these responsibilities a heavy burden. According to the tradition preserved at Pontoise, he fled the abbey more than once: he withdrew for a time to Cluny, the great Burgundian reform monastery, and he also attempted to live as a hermit.

He eventually traveled to Rome and petitioned Pope Gregory VII to be released from the abbacy. Gregory refused the request and ordered him to return to Pontoise and to persevere in obedience. Walter complied. In the years that followed he is described as an austere superior who upheld monastic discipline, protected the rights of his house, and showed particular care for the poor. He is also credited with founding a community of nuns at Bertaucourt (Bertaucourt-les-Dames) in Picardy. The details of individual incidents in the later lives should be treated with caution, but the central themes—reluctance to govern, repeated flight, papal command to remain, and a reputation for austerity—are consistent across the tradition.

Walter died at Pontoise on 8 April 1099 and was buried at his abbey. A local cult developed at the tomb. In 1153 Hugh of Amiens, Archbishop of Rouen, formally recognized his sanctity, an episcopal canonization typical of the twelfth century, before the papacy had fully reserved that act to itself. His feast is kept on 8 April. Later devotion has associated him especially with prisoners, and popular calendars have also invoked him for those oppressed by the cares of office, a theme that echoes the stories of his unsuccessful attempts to lay down the abbacy. The abbey of Pontoise was suppressed during the French Revolution, and the subsequent history of his relics is poorly documented.
