Biography

Short Description

Saint Wendelin of Trier, known in Latin as Wendelinus or Wendolinus, is a Christian hermit and abbot whose cult is centred on the western German lands of the old diocese of Trier, especially present-day Saarland. Almost nothing about him can be established from contemporary sixth- or seventh-century documents. The story that has been handed down is a medieval legend, committed to writing many centuries after the period in which he is supposed to have lived. According to that tradition he was of royal Scottish birth—medieval Latin Scotia could denote Ireland as well as the later kingdom of Scotland—and left his home to live as a pilgrim. After travels that some versions of the legend extend as far as Rome, he withdrew into the forests of the Moselle–Saar country, in the orbit of the see of Trier, and took up the eremitical life.

The legend continues that a local landowner discovered the hermit and set him to work first as a swineherd and then as a shepherd. Wendelin’s reputation for holiness and for a special care of animals spread among country people, and miracles involving livestock were later attributed to him. He is said to have been called in time to govern the monastery of Tholey, an early medieval house in what is now Saarland, and thus to have served as abbot before returning to solitude. Whether he was a professed Benedictine cannot be verified from early sources; Tholey later became a Benedictine abbey, and subsequent tradition associated Wendelin with that community. His life as presented in the vita is therefore that of a pilgrim-hermit who for a period bore pastoral and abbatial responsibility, not that of a man of the world: the tradition gives him neither wife nor children.

He is traditionally held to have died in 617 at his hermitage. Around his tomb a church and then a settlement grew, which took his name and is the present town of Sankt Wendel in Saarland. His relics are kept in the late Gothic Wendalinusbasilika there, which became a pilgrimage church of more than local importance. From the later Middle Ages his cult was strong among rural populations of the Rhineland, Saarland, Alsace, and neighbouring regions. He was invoked as protector of shepherds, herdsmen, peasants, farmers, and livestock, and in times of cattle plague and epidemic. The town of Sankt Wendel itself regards him as its patron.

Wendelin’s feast is kept on 21 October. He belongs to the large number of early medieval saints whose cult arose by popular and episcopal veneration rather than by a formal papal canonization of the later type; no individual pope can be named as having canonized or beatified him. Modern historical scholarship treats the Scottish princely origin and many picturesque details of the vita as legendary accretions. What remains reasonably secure is that a holy man named Wendelin was commemorated from the early Middle Ages in the Trier region, that his burial place became a durable pilgrimage site and the nucleus of a town, and that his patronage of pastoral and agricultural life has been continuous in German-speaking Catholic piety for many centuries.
