Biography

Short Description

Saint Wendreda, whose name also appears as Wendreth or Wendred, is among the most poorly documented of the early English saints. She is remembered as an Anglo-Saxon woman of the seventh century whose life and cult were rooted in the fenlands of what is now Cambridgeshire, above all the settlement of March in the Isle of Ely. No contemporary vita, charter, or chronicle entry can be shown to describe her with certainty. What is known depends on later medieval notices of her relics, on the unique surviving church dedication at March, and on local tradition that accumulated after the Norman Conquest. Historians therefore treat almost every biographical detail as provisional.

Later tradition portrays Wendreda as a woman of East Anglian royal or noble birth who withdrew from secular life to become a nun or hermit and who acquired a reputation as a healer of both people and animals. Some modern writers have suggested that she was a daughter of Anna, king of the East Angles in the mid-seventh century, and thus a sister of the well-attested abbesses and saints Æthelthryth of Ely, Seaxburh, and Wihtburh. That genealogy is not found in Bede, in the Liber Eliensis, or in other principal early authorities on the East Anglian royal house, and it should not be regarded as established. What can be said is that her memory belongs to the same world of seventh-century East Anglian Christianity that produced those better-documented royal nuns, a world in which monasteries and eremitical cells were planted across the fens.

The strongest traces of her cult are liturgical and architectural rather than narrative. The parish church of Saint Wendreda at March is the only church in England known to bear her dedication. The present building is largely later medieval and is renowned for its double hammer-beam roof densely carved with angels, but the dedication itself points to an older local cult. In the twelfth century the Peterborough chronicler Hugh Candidus included Wendreda among the saints whose relics were preserved at the nearby Benedictine abbey of Thorney, one of the fenland houses restored in the tenth-century Benedictine reform. Other, less easily verified traditions hold that her body had first rested at March, that it was translated to Ely, or that King Cnut, who ruled England in the early eleventh century and was a benefactor of fenland monasteries, moved the relics, in one version as far as Canterbury. These stories cannot be fully harmonized; they do indicate that by the high Middle Ages several major churches in the region claimed an association with her remains.

No year of birth or death is recorded, and no feast day for Wendreda is securely established in the early English calendars. She was not the object of a papal canonization; like most saints of the conversion-period English kingdoms, she belongs to the age of local and popular recognition later termed pre-congregational cultus. In subsequent devotion she has been honoured as patron of March and remembered as a healer, consistent with the traditional outline of her life. Beyond that outline—an early medieval religious woman of the East Anglian fens, venerated at March and named among the relics of Thorney—the historical person remains almost entirely hidden. The persistence of her name in a single parish dedication is itself the chief reason she is still known.
