Biography

Short Description

Werner of Oberwesel, also known as Werner of Bacharach, was a German youth of the late thirteenth century whose death became the centre of a Rhineland blood-libel cult. Conventional dates for his life are 1271 to 1287. According to the later hagiographical tradition he was born in the Hunsrück village of Womrath and worked as a poor Christian servant. Almost nothing about his family, employers, or daily life can be confirmed from independent contemporary records. The outline of a sixteen-year-old servant from the countryside around Oberwesel and Bacharach is all that the legend consistently supplies.

In the spring of 1287 his body was found near Bacharach on the Rhine, according to most accounts around Easter. Preachers and townspeople alleged that Jews had killed him in order to obtain blood for ritual use. That charge belongs to the medieval blood libel, a false accusation already known in England and on the Continent, and it was not established by any credible judicial process. The allegation nevertheless led to attacks on Jewish communities in Oberwesel, Bacharach, Boppard and other Middle Rhine towns in 1287, with killings and plunder. King Rudolf I of Habsburg, King of the Romans, is recorded as having opposed unauthorized violence and as having punished some of the perpetrators, which shows that royal authority did not treat the libel as proven. A popular cult of Werner as a boy martyr nonetheless formed at the place associated with his death.

From the late thirteenth century a chapel, later called the Wernerkapelle, was begun on the hillside above Bacharach to honour him. The ambitious Gothic building was never completed and survives as a ruin. Pilgrimage, relics and images made Werner a local saint of the Middle Rhine, and winegrowing communities took him as a patron. His feast was observed on 19 April. Medieval and early modern vernacular songs, legends and Latin offices elaborated the martyrdom story. The cult remained popular and diocesan; Werner was never formally canonized or beatified by a pope. It belongs with other medieval boy-martyr cults, such as those of William of Norwich and Simon of Trent, in which an unexplained death was given an antisemitic meaning and a shrine.

Modern historical study has found no reliable evidence that Jews murdered Werner and treats the events of 1287 as a pogrom justified by legend. In 1963 the Diocese of Trier removed his feast from its calendar, ending official liturgical veneration. The ruined Wernerkapelle remains a landmark on the Rhine and a reminder of how a youth’s death was used to sacralize hostility toward Jews. What can be stated with confidence is limited: a boy died near Bacharach in 1287; a martyr cult grew around his tomb; that cult rested on a blood libel; and the Church later withdrew recognition of the cult.
