Biography

Short Description

Saint Bridget of Sweden, known in Swedish as Birgitta Birgersdotter and often commemorated in older martyrologies simply as Bridget the Widow, was born in 1303 at Finsta in Uppland, in the Kingdom of Sweden. She came from the high nobility: her father, Birger Persson, was lawspeaker of Uppland and a major landowner, and her mother, Ingeborg Bengtsdotter, belonged to a lineage connected with the Folkunga dynasty. Her mother died while Bridget was still a child. Later tradition, drawing on family memory and early lives, describes her as marked from youth by piety and by visionary experiences, including a childhood vision of the crucified Christ. In keeping with the marriage customs of her rank in the early fourteenth century, she was married in her early teens, about 1316, to Ulf Gudmarsson, a knight who later served as lawspeaker of Närke. The couple made their principal home at Ulvåsa in Östergötland.

The marriage lasted nearly thirty years and produced eight children, among them Katarina (Catherine of Vadstena), later venerated as a saint. Contemporary and near-contemporary sources present the household as devout and charitable. In the early 1340s Bridget and Ulf made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela; Ulf fell ill after their return and died about 1344. Thereafter Bridget embraced the life of a consecrated widow. She disposed of much of her property, associated herself with the Cistercian community at Alvastra, and began to record revelations she believed she received from Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints. These texts, gathered as the Revelationes, circulated widely in the later Middle Ages. They combined intense meditation on the Passion and the Nativity with sharp criticism of clerical corruption and repeated appeals for the pope to leave Avignon and restore the Roman see.

In 1349 she travelled to Rome, remaining based there for the rest of her life apart from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1371–1372. She lived in relative poverty, sought papal confirmation for a new religious family, and continued to dictate revelations. The rule she composed for a double monastery of women and men under an abbess, dedicated to the Most Holy Saviour, is the foundation of the Bridgettine Order. The motherhouse was established at Vadstena in Sweden according to her design, though she herself never lived there. She died in Rome on 23 July 1373. She was first buried at San Lorenzo in Panisperna; in 1374 her remains were translated to Vadstena Abbey, which became the centre of her cult and of her order.

Pope Boniface IX canonized her on 7 October 1391, a comparatively rapid process that rested on her reputation for holiness, reported miracles, and the political-religious climate of the late fourteenth century. Her feast, long observed on 8 October in the Roman calendar, is now kept on 23 July, the day of her death. In 1999 Pope John Paul II named her a co-patroness of Europe, together with Benedict, Cyril and Methodius, Catherine of Siena, and Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She is also venerated as a patron of Sweden, of widows, and of pilgrims. Historical study distinguishes the solid outline of her noble birth, marriage, widowhood, Roman years, and canonization—attested in contemporary records and early vitae—from later legendary expansion, while her Revelationes remain a major source for fourteenth-century devotion and reform thought. The Bridgettine Order declined after the Reformation but survived in places and has been revived in the modern period.
