Biography

Short Description

Wigstan, whose name is also recorded in the forms Wistan and Wystan, was a prince of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia in the ninth century and was afterwards honoured as a Christian martyr. He belonged to the Mercian royal house: his father was Wigmund, son of King Wiglaf of Mercia, and his mother was Ælfflæd, a daughter of King Ceolwulf I of Mercia. The family stood at the centre of Mercian politics in a generation marked by contested kingship, the rising power of Wessex, and the first serious Viking attacks on the English kingdoms. No contemporary record preserves the year or place of Wigstan’s birth, and nothing reliable is known of his upbringing beyond his princely status.

Medieval accounts, written well after the events they describe, present Wigstan as a youth who, on his father’s death, was the natural heir to Mercia yet refused the crown in order to follow a religious life. He is said to have received the clerical tonsure and to have committed himself to celibacy and devotion rather than to royal marriage and rule. Political conflict followed when Beorhtfrith, son of King Beorhtwulf of Mercia, sought to marry the widowed Ælfflæd. Wigstan forbade the marriage because the parties were within the prohibited degrees of kinship. Beorhtfrith, whose prospects of influence depended on the match, responded with violence.

According to the hagiographical tradition, Beorhtfrith summoned Wigstan to a conference under the guise of peace. At that meeting he struck the prince on the head with the haft of a dagger, and an accomplice stabbed Wigstan with a sword. Chroniclers following John of Worcester assigned the murder to 1 June 849; some modern historians, noting the chronology of Beorhtwulf’s reign, have suggested a date nearer 840. Legend added that a shaft of light shone from the place of the killing until the crime was made known. The precise location is not certain: place-names such as Wistow in Leicestershire and Wistanstow in Shropshire have both been proposed as the site, each preserving a form of the saint’s name, but neither identification can be proved.

The body was carried to Repton in Derbyshire, the burial church of Mercian royalty, and interred in the monastic church there. A cult of Wigstan as martyr grew at Repton. In the early eleventh century King Cnut had the relics translated to Evesham Abbey in Worcestershire, which thereafter claimed him as a principal saint and kept his feast on 1 June. Dedications and place-names in the English midlands preserved his memory. Wigstan was not canonized by a later papal process; like many early English martyrs he was recognized by local liturgical cult. The written Passio and the chronicle notices are late and shaped by monastic interests, especially those of Evesham, so that many narrative details remain beyond independent verification. What can be said with caution is that a Mercian royal kinsman named Wigstan was killed in a dynastic quarrel in the mid-ninth century, was buried at Repton, and was venerated as a saint whose relics were later enshrined at Evesham.
