Biography

Short Description

Wihtburh (also Withburga or Wihtburga) was an East Anglian princess and monastic foundress of the seventh and eighth centuries, later venerated as a saint. She was the youngest daughter of Anna, king of the East Angles, who was killed in battle against Penda of Mercia around 653 or 654. Several of her sisters were likewise honoured as saints: Æthelthryth (Etheldreda), foundress of the monastery at Ely; Seaxburh, queen of Kent and later abbess of Ely; and Æthelburh, abbess of Faremoutiers in Francia. Sæthryth, Anna’s stepdaughter, was also an abbess in Francia. No contemporary record of Wihtburh’s birth survives, and her year of birth is unknown. Knowledge of her life depends almost entirely on later Ely tradition, especially the Liber Eliensis, and on brief notices in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, rather than on seventh- or eighth-century documents.

Later medieval narrative places her first as a recluse at Holkham in Norfolk after her father’s death, and then as foundress of a religious community at East Dereham (Dereham). Hagiographical legend, preserved in the Ely sources, relates that while the convent was being built she lacked means to feed the workmen, and that a wild doe came daily to be milked until a local official tried to hunt the animal and was thrown from his horse and killed. Animal-miracle stories of this kind are common in early medieval saints’ lives and cannot be independently verified, but they became a lasting part of her local cult. She is often described in later Catholic tradition as a Benedictine abbess; the precise monastic rule observed at Dereham in her lifetime is not documented in contemporary sources. She lived as a consecrated virgin in the monastic life and is not recorded as having married or had children.

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Wihtburh died in 743. The same chronicle records that in 798 her body was found incorrupt, fifty-five years after her death, and was translated from the churchyard into the church at Dereham. Her tomb there became a focus of local devotion. In 974, according to Ely tradition, Abbot Byrhtnoth of Ely, wishing to gather the relics of the East Anglian royal sisters at Ely, went to Dereham, entertained the townspeople, and while they slept removed Wihtburh’s body and took it by water to Ely. The people of Dereham pursued the party but failed to recover the relics. A spring is said to have risen in the empty grave; Withburga’s Well at East Dereham remained a pilgrimage site in later centuries. The relics were enshrined at Ely Abbey beside those of Æthelthryth and Seaxburh. Ely became a cathedral in 1109. The shrine was destroyed at the Reformation and the relics were lost.

Wihtburh’s feast is kept on 8 July. She is particularly associated with East Dereham, where the well and later church dedication preserve her memory, and she is regarded as the town’s patron saint. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; her cult grew from local and monastic veneration, as was typical of early English saints. Many narrative details of her life remain legendary rather than demonstrably factual, and the historian must distinguish the thin chronicle framework (death in 743, translation in 798, removal to Ely in 974) from the later hagiographical colouring attached to her name.
