Biography

Short Description

Wilfrido della Gherardesca, known in Latin as Walfridus and also called Galfrido, Goffredo, or Saint Walfrid, was an eighth-century nobleman and Benedictine abbot of Tuscany. Tradition places his birth in Pisa, where he is associated with the Gherardesca family, a lineage later prominent in that city. No reliable source records the year of his birth, and it should not be inferred from the date of his abbacy or of the monastery he founded. As a layman he married a woman named Thesia. They had a large family, including five sons; the early narrative of his life names two of them, Gimfrid and Andrew, and indicates that the couple also had at least one daughter. For some years he lived as a prosperous citizen of Pisa, occupied with household and worldly affairs.

In mid life Walfrid and Thesia resolved to leave secular status and take up the monastic life. With two companions, Gimfrid and Fortis, he founded a monastery dedicated to Saint Peter at Palazzuolo, in the Monteverdi district between Volterra and Massa Marittima. The foundation is commonly placed in the middle of the eighth century, when Tuscany still belonged to the Lombard kingdom. The community followed the Rule of Saint Benedict. Nearby he also established a house for nuns, which Thesia and their daughter entered. Walfrid himself received the Benedictine habit and was chosen as first abbot of San Pietro in Palazzuolo, later often called the abbey of Monteverdi.

The principal witness to his years as abbot is a Latin life written after his death by his son Andrew. It portrays him as a strict and energetic superior. One episode became especially well known: his son Gimfrid, already a priest and monk, fled the cloister. After he was brought back, Walfrid had an iron ring or shackle fastened to his ankle as a lasting penance. The same account states that the shackle later came away in circumstances the community regarded as miraculous, once Gimfrid had submitted in repentance. The story was preserved to illustrate both the abbot's severity and the working of mercy inside the monastery.

Walfrid died in 765 and was buried at the house he had founded. Andrew succeeded him as abbot and composed the Vita Walfredi, which remains the chief, and almost the only, narrative source for his career. Because that text is filial hagiography, many points of chronology and of Walfrid's early years cannot be independently confirmed. His cult grew around the Tuscan abbey. Calendars assign his feast to 15 February. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.

In later centuries the abbey of Monteverdi declined and was in time suppressed, and the documentary record grows thin. Walfrid continued to be venerated as a Benedictine founder and, in pious tradition, as an ancestor of the Gherardesca of Pisa. No surviving medieval source names a pope who formally canonized him, which is typical of saints whose cult arose before the centralized procedures of the later Middle Ages. Beyond the outline given by Andrew, his year of birth and any later official patronages are not securely attested.
