Biography

Short Description

Saint Willehad was an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon missionary and the first bishop of Bremen. He was born in the kingdom of Northumbria in what is now northern England. Early accounts describe his family as of respectable or noble standing, but they do not record a birth year or a precise birthplace. He received a clerical education in Northumbria and was ordained priest there. Later tradition associates him with the learned circles of the Northumbrian church and with the scholar Alcuin, though the details of that connection rest on later narrative sources rather than on a contemporary dossier of letters.

With the permission of the Northumbrian king he left England to preach among the Frisians, continuing the Anglo-Saxon mission associated with Willibrord. He worked in and around Dokkum and elsewhere in Frisia before turning toward the Saxons. About 780 Charlemagne assigned him to evangelize Wigmodia, the country between the lower Weser and the Elbe. That work was broken off by the Saxon revolt of 782 under Widukind, in the course of which some of those attached to the mission were killed. Willehad escaped, withdrew into Frisia, and then travelled to Rome, where he visited Pope Adrian I. He afterwards spent a period of retreat at the monastery of Echternach, the house founded by Willibrord in what is now Luxembourg.

After Charlemagne had suppressed the rising and Widukind accepted baptism in 785, Willehad returned to the Saxon mission. On 13 July 787 he was consecrated bishop at Worms and given charge of the newly organized Saxon territories, with his seat at Bremen. He is therefore counted as the first Bishop of Bremen. He built a wooden cathedral there dedicated to Saint Peter; it was consecrated on 1 November 789. A few days later, on 8 November 789, he died at Blexen on the Weser. He was buried in the cathedral he had founded at Bremen.

The principal narrative source for his life is the Vita Willehadi, a ninth-century text produced in the Bremen church. Veneration of Willehad took root at Bremen and in the surrounding region of Saxony and Frisia. His feast is kept on 8 November. He is remembered as a patron of Bremen and as one of the Anglo-Saxon missionaries who, under Frankish protection, helped to establish a lasting church organization among the Saxons.
