Biography

Short Description

William Finnemann was born Wilhelm Finnemann on 18 December 1882 in Hüls, a Rhineland town in the German Empire that is now a district of Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia. He entered the Society of the Divine Word, the missionary congregation founded by Arnold Janssen, and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1911. The SVD assigned him to the Philippines, and he arrived in 1929 to work on Mindoro, then an apostolic prefecture in the care of the Divine Word Missionaries. The island combined Christian lowland towns with interior communities of Mangyan peoples and had only rudimentary roads and communications.

In 1936 the prefecture was raised to the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan. Pope Pius XI appointed Finnemann its first apostolic vicar and titular bishop of Sora; he was consecrated bishop the same year and made his seat at Calapan on Mindoro’s northern coast. As vicar apostolic he was responsible for parishes, mission stations, and schools across a large, poorly connected territory, directing SVD confreres together with local clergy and catechists under conditions of poverty and difficult travel.

Japanese forces occupied Mindoro in 1942. Although Finnemann was a German national and Germany was then allied with Japan, he opposed the occupiers’ seizure of churches and mission property. Consistent later testimony holds that he also refused to surrender Filipino women who had taken refuge with the Church and protested their abuse by soldiers. Those stands led to his arrest by Japanese military authorities in October 1942.

On 26 October 1942 he was taken by boat into the Verde Island Passage, the strait between Mindoro and the Batangas coast of Luzon, and thrown overboard with a weight so that he drowned. His body was never recovered. The Catholic Church regards him as a martyr and has given him the title Servant of God; a cause for beatification has been introduced, but he has not been beatified or canonized. He is remembered in the Diocese of Calapan, successor to his vicariate, and in the Society of the Divine Word as the first bishop of that see and as a pastor killed for defending his people.
