Biography

Short Description

William Joseph Chaminade (Guillaume-Joseph Chaminade) was born on 8 April 1761 in Périgueux, in the Dordogne in southwestern France, the fourteenth of fifteen children of Blaise Chaminade, a cloth merchant, and Catherine Bethon. Several of his brothers entered the priesthood. He was educated in part by his older brother Jean-Baptiste, a priest, and then at the collège of Mussidan, where he later taught, served as treasurer, and acted as chaplain. He was ordained a priest in 1785 for the Diocese of Périgueux. When the French Revolution imposed the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, he refused the required oath. He continued a clandestine ministry, especially in and around Bordeaux, administering the sacraments in secret and assisting other non-juring clergy, until political pressure forced him into exile.

From 1797 to 1800 he lived in Zaragoza in Spain. There he prayed regularly at the shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar. That period of exile and Marian devotion became decisive for his later spirituality and apostolic plans. After the Concordat of 1801 he returned to France and settled in Bordeaux, where he was given responsibilities in the restoration of Church life, including work as an apostolic administrator in a diocese still recovering from revolutionary disruption. He gathered a Marian sodality at the chapel of the Madeleine in Bordeaux, intending it as a school of faith for lay people of different ages and social conditions and as a means of re-Christianizing society after the Revolution.

From that sodality grew two religious foundations. In 1816, together with Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon, he established the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (the Marianist Sisters). In 1817 he founded the Society of Mary (the Marianists), a congregation of priests and brothers. The Marianist charism he articulated stressed community life, Mary as the model of faith and of the Church, education as a principal apostolate, and the formation of lay Christians who would in turn form others. The Society of Mary developed schools and other works in France and, during his lifetime, began to spread beyond France.

His later years were marked by internal tensions in the Society, financial and administrative difficulties, and conflict over governance. In the 1840s Roman authorities removed him from active direction of the congregation he had founded, a trial he accepted in old age. He died in Bordeaux on 22 January 1850. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 3 September 2000. His liturgical memorial is kept on 22 January. The Marianist family—priests, brothers, sisters, and lay communities—continues educational and pastoral work in many countries, regarding him as founder and as a witness to Marian and communal apostolic life in the post-revolutionary Church.
