Biography

Short Description

William of Donjeon, also known as William of Bourges (Guillaume de Donjon or Guillaume de Bourges), was a Cistercian monk and metropolitan archbishop in the Kingdom of France at the turn of the thirteenth century. He was born in the mid-twelfth century into a noble family of the Nivernais, conventionally associated with Nevers and with the lords styled of Donjon, and presented in the sources as a kinsman of the counts of Nevers and of churchmen such as Peter of Corbeil. He received a clerical education, is reported to have been a canon of Soissons and of Paris, and then left secular ecclesiastical life for a stricter observance.

He first entered the Order of Grandmont, an austere eremitical congregation. Internal conflicts that troubled Grandmont in his generation led him to transfer to the Cistercians at Pontigny Abbey. He became abbot of the Cistercian house of Fontainejean and later of Chaalis (Châalis), a prominent royal foundation near Senlis, holding the latter office in the closing decades of the twelfth century. In 1200 the cathedral chapter of Bourges elected him archbishop. He refused the see until Pope Innocent III obliged him to accept it. Bourges was a metropolitan church with a traditional claim to primacy in Aquitaine.

As archbishop he kept Cistercian practices of fasting, vigil, and penitential dress while governing the diocese. Near-contemporary notices and later vitae stress his daily charity to the poor, attempts to reform the clergy, and defense of ecclesiastical rights. He supported the Gothic cathedral then under construction at Bourges and promoted hospitals and other works of mercy. He preached against the dualist heresy later called Albigensian or Cathar. After the murder of the papal legate Pierre de Castelnau in 1208, he prepared to take part in the crusade proclaimed by Innocent III.

William died at Bourges on 10 January 1209, before he could set out for Languedoc, and was buried in Bourges Cathedral. A cult formed at his tomb amid reports of miracles. Pope Honorius III canonized him in 1218, a relatively rapid papal recognition. His feast is kept on 10 January. Later tradition names him a patron of Bourges, of the University of Paris, and of armorers. Evidence for his childhood and inner life is thin and partly hagiographical; his public career as Cistercian abbot and reforming archbishop is the better-attested part of the record.
