Biography

Short Description

William Pinchon, known in French as Guillaume Pinchon and often called Saint William of Saint-Brieuc, was a medieval Breton bishop whose life is known from a relatively thin but consistent set of thirteenth-century notices and from the circumstances of his early papal canonization. He was born at Saint-Alban in northern Brittany, in the later twelfth century; later tradition often places the birth around 1180 or 1184, but no contemporary record fixes the year. He came from a family of modest condition in the countryside of what is now Côtes-d'Armor. Directed toward the Church from youth, he received a clerical education and was ordained. He became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Saint-Brieuc, where he acquired a reputation for personal austerity and for attention to the poor. In 1220 the chapter elected him bishop of Saint-Brieuc. He thus entered the episcopate as a secular clerk, not as a member of a religious order, at a moment when the Duchy of Brittany was under the forceful rule of Pierre Mauclerc (Peter of Dreux) and when disputes over ecclesiastical property and jurisdiction were frequent.

As bishop, Pinchon was remembered above all as a pastor and as a defender of the weak and of the rights of his church. Accounts of his episcopate stress almsgiving, simplicity of life, and resistance to seigneurial and ducal exactions that fell on peasants and on ecclesiastical revenues. His stand brought him into conflict with Duke Pierre Mauclerc, whose government in the 1220s and early 1230s was marked by heavy fiscal demands and by repeated collisions with Breton bishops. Pinchon refused to surrender church rights and property. The quarrel led to his being driven from his see. He spent a period of exile away from Saint-Brieuc and is reported to have been received in the diocese of Poitiers. Throughout the exile he continued to be regarded as the legitimate bishop of Saint-Brieuc rather than as a deposed or resigned prelate.

He later returned to his diocese and resumed its government. In the last years of his life he is associated with the continuing construction of the cathedral of Saint-Brieuc, a Gothic church then rising on the site of earlier buildings, and with ordinary pastoral administration after the worst of the ducal pressure had eased. He died at Saint-Brieuc on 29 July 1234 and was buried in his cathedral. Veneration at the tomb began quickly. Reports of miracles and favors circulated in Brittany, and the local church promoted his cause. Pope Innocent IV canonized him in 1247, only about thirteen years after his death—an unusually rapid papal canonization for the period, and one that reflects both the strength of the Breton cult and the papacy’s willingness to confirm it. There was no separate modern-style beatification; the 1247 act was a formal canonization.

His feast is kept on 29 July, the anniversary of his death. He is honored as principal patron of the city and diocese of Saint-Brieuc. Relics have been kept in Saint-Brieuc Cathedral, with later translations and a devotion that survived, in reduced form, even the disruptions of the French Revolution. Historical knowledge of Pinchon remains limited: the sources mix administrative fact with hagiographical portrait, and many pious details of his inner life cannot be verified independently. What can be stated with confidence is the outline of a late-twelfth-century Breton cleric who became bishop of Saint-Brieuc in 1220, clashed with ducal power in defense of his church and of the poor, endured exile, returned to his see, died there in 1234, and was canonized by Innocent IV in 1247.
