Biography

Short Description

William Tempier (French: Guillaume Tempier) was a twelfth-century Catholic bishop of Poitiers in western France. No reliable chronicle, episcopal catalogue, or charter records his year of birth, place of birth, family, or education. He first appears in the historical record with his accession to the see of Poitiers in 1184. At that date the city and the county of Poitou belonged to the Angevin domains of the Plantagenet kings of England, so that the new bishop entered office under Henry II and continued under Richard I.

Tempier governed the diocese for thirteen years. Surviving acts are sparse and largely administrative: they show him confirming privileges, overseeing clerical discipline, and managing the temporalities of a large and wealthy see whose cathedral chapter and monastic houses possessed extensive rights. The political setting was delicate. Poitou lay between Plantagenet Aquitaine and the expanding power of Philip II of France, and a bishop of Poitiers had to protect ecclesiastical liberties amid competing royal claims. Later local tradition remembered Tempier as a reforming and holy pastor, yet contemporary narrative sources are almost silent and no writings of his own survive.

He died in 1197, the date most frequently given being 27 March, and was buried in Poitiers. A cult developed around his memory within the diocese. Medieval liturgical calendars of Poitiers commemorated him as a saint, and his feast has continued to be observed locally on 27 March. No papal bull of canonization is known; his recognition belongs to the older, diocesan form of sainthood typical of many twelfth-century bishops before the later centralization of the process. He has never been the object of widespread devotion outside the former diocese of Poitiers, and no securely attested patronages of places, professions, or causes are attached to his name.

Modern historians therefore possess only fragmentary evidence. Tempier does not figure prominently in the major Angevin or Capetian chronicles, and the brevity of the record is characteristic of numerous prelates whose reputations for piety were preserved chiefly in local liturgical memory rather than in extensive vitae. The length of his episcopate and the persistence of his cult nevertheless indicate that he was regarded by the church of Poitiers as a worthy bishop.
