Biography

Short Description

Willigis was among the most influential churchmen of the Ottonian age, Archbishop of Mainz from 975 to 1011 and archchancellor of the German kingdom. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts agree that he came from unfree or otherwise humble parentage at Schöningen in Saxony. No exact year of birth survives in the sources; later tradition places it around the middle of the tenth century. Despite his origin he received a clerical education and entered the royal chapel, the usual path of advancement for able ecclesiastics in the Ottonian system. By about 971, under Otto I and then Otto II, he held the chancellorship for Germany, which gave him continuous access to the itinerant court and to the drafting of royal diplomas.

In 975 Otto II named him archbishop of Mainz, succeeding to the premier see of the German church. Pope Benedict VII conferred the pallium and confirmed metropolitan rights that included a leading part in the coronation of German kings, thereby binding the see of Mainz closely to the kingship. When Otto II died in Italy in 983, Willigis acted swiftly in Germany: he was among those who had the three-year-old Otto III crowned at Aachen at Christmas 983, and he worked with Empress Theophanu, and after her death with Empress Adelaide, to preserve the child’s throne against the pretensions of Henry the Wrangler of Bavaria. Throughout Otto III’s reign Willigis remained a central adviser, even as the young emperor pursued his own Roman and imperial ideas. After Otto III died in 1002 without an heir, Willigis supported Henry II of Bavaria and crowned him king at Mainz, helping to secure a contested succession.

His episcopate was not free of conflict. The most famous dispute, the Gandersheim controversy, pitted him against Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim over which diocese possessed jurisdiction over the imperial convent of Gandersheim, where Otto III’s sister Sophia was a prominent figure. The quarrel, which stretched across the 990s and the first years of the eleventh century, involved synods, papal interventions, and imperial arbitration; it illustrated both Willigis’s determination to defend the rights of Mainz and the limits of metropolitan power when a well-connected rival bishop and a royal abbey were involved. In the same decades Willigis undertook major building. He raised a new cathedral in Mainz in honor of Saint Martin. On the very day of its consecration in 1009 the church was ruined by fire; he at once set about rebuilding. He also founded the collegiate church of Saint Stephen on the highest point of the city, endowed other churches, and strengthened the material basis of the archbishopric. Mainz under his rule became a principal ecclesiastical capital of the empire.

Willigis died in Mainz on 23 February 1011 and was interred in Saint Stephen’s, the church he had established. Veneration began in the locality not long after his death; his feast is observed on 23 February. He was a secular clerk, not a monk of any religious order, and there is no evidence that he married or had children. He was neither pope nor an Eastern patriarch. No papal bull of canonization from the later centralized process is known; his cult belongs to the older pattern of episcopal and civic remembrance. Later medieval legend linked him with the wheel that appears in the arms of Mainz, a story that recalled his modest birth and that made him, in popular memory, a patron of the city. His historical importance rests on the combination of royal service, metropolitan ambition, and urban patronage that defined the Ottonian imperial church.
