Biography

Short Description

Wincenty Đỗ Yến (also known in English and Latin sources as Vincent Đỗ Yến, Vincent Do Yen, or Vincentius Do Yen) was a Vietnamese priest of the Order of Preachers and one of the Catholic martyrs of nineteenth-century Tonkin later canonized among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. He was born in 1764 in the village of Trà Lũ in Nam Định province, in the Tonkin region of what is now northern Vietnam. Catholicism had been planted in that area by Dominican missionaries of the Spanish Province of the Holy Rosary, working from the Philippines, from the seventeenth century onward. Đỗ Yến entered the Dominican Order as a native Vietnamese candidate and was ordained a priest. He belonged to the growing body of indigenous clergy who served village communities alongside Spanish friars in the apostolic vicariates of Eastern and Central Tonkin.

His ministry took place in a political climate that grew steadily more hostile to Christianity after the Nguyễn dynasty unified Vietnam. Emperors of that house, above all Minh Mạng (reigned 1820–1841), issued edicts that treated the faith as a foreign subversion of Confucian hierarchy and royal authority. Churches were destroyed, the faithful were ordered to recant by trampling a crucifix, and priests were hunted as criminals. Despite these measures, Father Đỗ Yến continued to celebrate the sacraments and to support Catholic communities that often had to gather in secret. Surviving records do not preserve a rich store of personal anecdote about his early life or daily pastoral work; as with many Vietnamese martyrs, what is known comes chiefly from missionary reports and from the later beatification process rather than from extensive private papers.

In 1838, during a severe phase of Minh Mạng’s persecution, he was arrested. He refused to apostatize. Condemned to death, he was beheaded on 30 June 1838 at Hải Dương. He was about seventy-four years old. Contemporary accounts present him as a priest who remained faithful to his vows and to his flock under interrogation and the threat of execution. He is thus counted among the Vietnamese Dominican clergy who died in the Minh Mạng persecutions of the 1830s.

Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 together with a large group of martyrs of Annam and Tonkin. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him among Andrew Dũng-Lạc and 116 companions, the group now known as the Martyrs of Vietnam. In the General Roman Calendar their collective feast is kept on 24 November. Individual biographical detail beyond the outline of his birth at Trà Lũ, Dominican priesthood, arrest, and martyrdom at Hải Dương remains limited in published historical sources.
