Biography

Short Description

Saint Winwaloe, known in Breton as Gwenolé and in French as Guénolé (Latin Winwaloeus or Winwallus), was a monastic founder active in western Armorica during the late fifth and early sixth centuries. He is remembered as the first abbot of Landévennec, which became one of the principal monasteries of medieval Brittany. Almost all narrative detail about him derives from the Latin Vita Winwaloei written in the ninth century by Wrdisten (Gurdisten), abbot of Landévennec, together with later liturgical and local traditions. That dossier shows how the community remembered its founder, but it is not a contemporary biography, and precise dates and colourful episodes cannot be independently confirmed.

According to this tradition, Winwaloe was the son of Fragan (or Fracan), a British figure of rank who left Britain during the disorders associated with the Anglo-Saxon advance, and of Gwen, later given the epithet Teirbron and herself venerated as a saint. The family settled in Armorica. Later lore connects them with Ploufragan in northern Brittany and, alternatively, places Winwaloe's birth in the Léon district near Plouguin; neither identification is secure. He is said to have had brothers named Jacut and Guethenoc, both of whom attracted cults, and a sister. As a boy he was given over to the monastic household of Saint Budoc on the island of Lavret, in the Bréhat group off the northern Breton coast, where he received the Christian and ascetic formation typical of Insular and Armorican monasticism of that period.

When he left Budoc's island he sought a stricter life with a small band of companions, numbered in the Life as twelve in all, in imitation of apostolic symbolism common in Celtic hagiography. They first attempted to settle on Tibidy, a low island in the roadstead of Brest, but after about three years abandoned it as too exposed and barren. They then established a monastery at Landévennec, on a wooded peninsula at the meeting of the Aulne and the Faou in Cornouaille, a site better sheltered and better supplied. There Winwaloe organised a community in the Celtic abbatial pattern, living under a severe personal rule of fasting, prayer, and manual work. The Benedictine Rule was not the original observance of the house; it was adopted only in the ninth century under Carolingian reform, long after his death. Medieval descriptions portray him as of small stature and of uncompromising austerity, and as remaining abbot until he died.

The day assigned to his death, and the principal feast in his honour, is 3 March; the year 532 is the date given by conventional chronology and widely repeated in martyrologies, though it rests on later calculation rather than on an archival obituary. He was buried at Landévennec. The abbey grew into a major Breton centre of cult and learning. In the early tenth century Viking raids forced the monks to flee; relics believed to be his were carried east and came to be honoured at Montreuil-sur-Mer in Picardy, while the Breton house was later restored. Churches in Cornwall, notably at Landewednack and Gunwalloe, preserve forms of his name and attest to the older maritime and Brittonic world that linked western Britain and Armorica. Winwaloe was not canonised by a formal papal process of the later medieval type; his sanctity was of the early, local, and monastic kind subsequently registered in calendars. Beyond the reasonable conclusion that an abbot of this name was associated with the foundation of Landévennec in the post-Roman Breton settlement of Armorica, the historian must treat the narrative episodes of the Life as pious tradition rather than as verified event.
