Biography

Short Description

Włodzimierz Szembek was a Polish nobleman, landowner, and member of the Franciscan Third Order who died as a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Second World War. He was born in 1883 in the village of Poręba Żegoty, west of Kraków in the historical region of Galicia, then belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now in southern Poland. The Szembek family was an old Polish aristocratic house possessing estates in the area. He received an education directed toward agriculture and the management of landed property and subsequently took up the administration of family holdings, living as a member of the rural landowning class in the Kraków region.

In the early twentieth century and during the interwar years of restored Polish independence, Szembek was known as a lay Catholic engaged in religious and social work. He became a tertiary of the Third Order of Saint Francis, accepting a rule of life that combined prayer, sacramental practice, and charity with remaining in the secular state. He participated in Catholic associations characteristic of the period, including forms of Catholic Action, and was remembered for attention to the spiritual and material needs of people living on and around the estates. His public profile was that of an aristocrat whose faith found expression in organized lay apostolate rather than in ordained ministry or cloistered religious life.

Following the German invasion of Poland in 1939, occupying authorities carried out a systematic repression of Polish elites, clergy, and socially prominent Catholics. Landowners identified with patriotic or Church-related activity were frequent targets of arrest. In 1942 Szembek was detained by the German security police, imprisoned, and deported to Auschwitz. He died in the camp on 7 September 1942. His death occurred in the context of the mass killing and lethal neglect of Polish prisoners and has been interpreted by those who honor his memory as martyrdom arising from Nazi persecution of the Polish nation and of active Catholics.

Catholic memory has preserved Szembek as a Servant of God, a designation applied to persons whose holiness or martyrdom is under consideration for possible beatification. He has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church, and he therefore has no official feast day in the universal or a widely established local calendar, nor a list of canonical patronages. Some particulars of his private life, including whether he married or had children, are not firmly established in the widely available historical and hagiographical sources, and a cautious account must leave those points unspecified.
