Biography

Short Description

Wolbodo (also known as Wolbodon or Vulbodon) was a Flemish cleric of noble birth who became bishop of Liège in the early eleventh century and was afterward venerated as a saint. He was born in Flanders in the tenth century to a family of the regional nobility. Surviving sources do not record a precise year or place of birth, nor do they name his parents. As a young man he was educated at the cathedral school of Utrecht, then a notable centre of learning in the Low Countries, and he entered the cathedral clergy there.

At Utrecht he became a canon of the cathedral chapter. He served as scholaster, the master of the cathedral school, and later as provost, the principal dignity among the canons. In these offices he gained a reputation for learning, personal austerity, and pastoral seriousness. Near-contemporary notices present him as the kind of educated, reform-minded clerk whom the Ottonian and early Salian emperors preferred to raise to important sees.

In 1018, after the death of Bishop Baldric II, the Emperor Henry II appointed Wolbodo to the bishopric of Liège. That see was among the chief ecclesiastical principalities of Lower Lotharingia, combining spiritual jurisdiction with substantial temporal power inside the Holy Roman Empire. Wolbodo’s episcopate lasted only about three years. In that short time he is described as having governed with humility and charity, supporting churches and the poor and maintaining the scholarly and liturgical traditions of the Liège church. He belonged to the circle of Lorraine prelates associated with clerical and monastic reform, though the brevity of his tenure limited what he could achieve as bishop.

Wolbodo died at Liège on 21 April 1021 and was succeeded by Bishop Durand. After his death he was honoured as a saint, especially in the diocese of Liège and in the Low Countries. His cult was local and traditional rather than the product of a later-style papal canonization. His feast is kept on 21 April. The evidence for his life is relatively thin, depending on episcopal catalogues, brief chronicle notices, and later hagiographical tradition; many personal details therefore cannot be established with certainty.
