Biography

Short Description

Wolfgang of Regensburg was born about 934 into a family of the Swabian nobility, traditionally at Pfullingen in the Duchy of Swabia. He was educated first at the abbey of Reichenau, one of the foremost monastic schools of the tenth-century German kingdom, and afterwards at Würzburg under the Italian master Stephen of Novara. His reputation for learning led Archbishop Henry of Trier, to whom he was related, to summon him to Trier, where Wolfgang directed the cathedral school and formed a circle of reform-minded clergy. After Henry died in 964, Wolfgang withdrew from the world and entered the Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln, then a center of monastic renewal in the Alpine region of Swabia. There he was ordained priest. In 971 Saint Ulrich of Augsburg dispatched him as a missionary to the Magyars of Pannonia; the mission produced little lasting conversion but formed part of the Ottonian effort to evangelize the eastern frontier.

On Christmas Day 972 Emperor Otto II named Wolfgang bishop of Regensburg in Bavaria, and he was consecrated that same day. He held the see until his death. As bishop he pursued a program of ecclesiastical reform characteristic of the Ottonian church. He enforced a stricter observance of the Benedictine Rule at the ancient monastery of Saint Emmeram, which had long been united to the bishopric, and he legally separated the monastery's property from that of the diocese, installing the monk Ramwold as abbot so that the community could live independently according to its rule. Wolfgang was noted for personal asceticism, generosity to the poor, and insistence on clerical discipline. He also acted as tutor to the young Henry, son of the Bavarian ducal house, who later reigned as Emperor Henry II and who retained a lifelong devotion to his former teacher.

Political unrest in Bavaria during the 970s, especially the rebellion of Duke Henry the Quarrelsome against Otto II, interrupted Wolfgang's episcopate. Tradition holds that he retired for a time to a hermitage in the Salzkammergut, at the lake later called the Wolfgangsee. Medieval legend recounts that he flung an axe from a mountain and vowed to build a church wherever it landed; the pilgrimage church of Saint Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee grew up around this story. Whether or not the hermitage episode can be reconstructed in detail, Wolfgang returned to his diocese and continued his pastoral work. He remained a respected figure at the Ottonian court and a model of the monk-bishop.

In the autumn of 994, while traveling along the Danube, Wolfgang fell ill. He died on 31 October 994 at Pupping, in a chapel dedicated to Saint Othmar, in the region of present-day Upper Austria. His body was carried back to Regensburg and buried in the church of Saint Emmeram. Reports of miracles at the tomb spread quickly. In 1052 Pope Leo IX, at the petition of Bishop Gebhard of Regensburg, formally canonized Wolfgang. His feast day is 31 October. Throughout the later Middle Ages he was venerated as one of the great saints of Bavaria, a patron of Regensburg, of carpenters and woodcarvers, and a helper against paralysis, stroke, and diseases of the stomach. His life, known chiefly from the mid-eleventh-century Vita written by the monk Othlo of Saint Emmeram, presents him as a reforming prelate of the tenth-century German church.
