Biography

Short Description

The woman with seven sons is a Jewish martyr whose story is preserved in chapter 7 of the deuterocanonical book of 2 Maccabees. The narrative is placed in the 160s BCE, during the campaign of the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes to suppress Jewish religious practice. According to the text, a mother and her seven sons were seized and commanded to eat swine’s flesh, an act forbidden by the Mosaic law. Each son in succession refused. The king then subjected them to elaborate tortures described in the book—scalping, mutilation of the extremities, and frying in heated pans—before executing them in the presence of their mother and remaining brothers. The mother, speaking in the ancestral language, urged her children not to abandon the law of their fathers and expressed confidence in God’s power to restore life. After the youngest son had also been killed, 2 Maccabees records that the mother died last of all. The biblical text does not name her, does not give her place of birth or death, and does not describe the precise manner of her own dying.

A longer, more philosophical retelling appears in 4 Maccabees, a Hellenistic Jewish work probably composed in the first century CE. That book locates the martyrdom at Antioch and presents the mother as the moral climax of the story: she watches her sons die and masters her natural affection through pious reason. In an appended speech she recalls that she was raised as a modest virgin in her father’s house, that a husband was given to her, and that this husband instructed their sons in the Law and the Prophets. Even in 4 Maccabees she remains unnamed, and the husband’s name is likewise unrecorded. These two Greek texts are the principal ancient literary sources; they belong to the genre of martyr narrative and cannot be corroborated by independent contemporary documents.

Subsequent Jewish and Christian traditions filled in a personal name and additional legendary material. Rabbinic versions, notably in the Babylonian Talmud (Gittin 57b) and in Lamentations Rabbah, tell of a mother and seven sons who refuse to bow to an idol in a Roman rather than a Seleucid setting; the mother is there called Miriam bat Tanhum, and in later Jewish usage she is often known as Hannah. The medieval Hebrew historical compilation Josippon also employs the name Hannah. Greek-speaking Christians came to call her Solomonia or Solomonis; Syriac and other Oriental Christian traditions know her as Shmuni, Shamoni, or Ashmunit; Armenian sources commemorate Shmouni with her sons. None of these names can be traced to a second-century BCE record. They reflect the piety of later communities that wished to honor an anonymous heroine of the Maccabean age.

From late antiquity the mother and her sons were venerated together as the Holy Maccabean Martyrs in Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Catholic churches. Their principal feast day is 1 August. A martyrium at Antioch was associated with them in the fourth and fifth centuries; relics attributed to the seven brothers and their mother were later claimed at Constantinople and at Rome, including in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli. In Jewish tradition the story became a classic example of kiddush hashem, sanctification of the Name through martyrdom, and has been retold in connection with Hanukkah and with later episodes of persecution, although 2 Maccabees is not canonical in Judaism. Because the figure is known only through religious literature, no historically verified year of birth or death, place of birth or burial, or family names beyond the later legendary attributions can be established. Historians therefore treat her as a representative martyr of Hellenistic Judaism rather than as a biographically documented individual.
