Biography

Short Description

Wulfsige III was a late tenth-century Anglo-Saxon bishop who held the see of Sherborne in Dorset from his consecration in 992 until his death in 1002. He is numbered the third bishop of that name at Sherborne in order to distinguish him from Wulfsige I, who occupied the see in the late ninth century, and from Wulfsige II, who died in 958. Nothing reliable is known of his parentage, place of birth, or year of birth. He belonged to the generation of English churchmen shaped by the tenth-century Benedictine reform. Later medieval and early modern tradition identified him as a monk of Glastonbury and as abbot of Westminster before his elevation to Sherborne, but those identifications are not securely proven and are treated with caution by modern historians.

As bishop, Wulfsige aligned the West Saxon see of Sherborne with the monastic reform associated with Saints Dunstan, Æthelwold of Winchester, and Oswald of Worcester, which sought to replace communities of secular clergy with Benedictine monks living under a common rule. Around 998, with the consent of King Æthelred II, he converted the cathedral chapter at Sherborne from a body of secular canons into a Benedictine monastic community. Sherborne thereby became a monastic cathedral, comparable to Winchester, Worcester, and Canterbury, with the bishop exercising abbatial authority over the monks of the house. This change is the act for which his episcopate is best remembered in the institutional history of the English Church.

Wulfsige’s government of the diocese is unusually well documented in the sphere of pastoral instruction because of his connection with the scholar and homilist Ælfric of Eynsham. Ælfric addressed to him a set of Latin pastoral letters, later issued also in Old English, setting out the duties of priests, the conduct of the mass and of baptism, and standards of clerical life. Material from those letters was adapted into a pastoral letter or set of diocesan statutes issued in Wulfsige’s name for the clergy of Sherborne. The resulting texts are among the most important surviving witnesses to late Anglo-Saxon expectations of parish clergy and to the practical working of reform at diocesan level around the year 1000.

Wulfsige died on 8 January 1002 and was buried at Sherborne. A local cult developed around his memory at the abbey, and medieval calendars record his feast on 8 January. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; veneration remained regional and centred on Sherborne Abbey. His successor in the see was Æthelric. In the following century the West Saxon dioceses were reorganised, and Sherborne’s separate diocesan identity was eventually absorbed into the later medieval diocese of Salisbury. Wulfsige is remembered chiefly as a reforming Benedictine bishop and as the addressee of Ælfric’s pastoral letters, which preserve an unusually clear picture of episcopal care for the clergy in England at the close of the tenth century.
