Biography

Short Description

Wulfthryth of Wilton, also known as Wulthryth, Wulfrida, or Wilfrida, was a tenth-century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who became abbess of Wilton Abbey in Wiltshire and was later venerated as a saint. Little can be established with certainty about her parentage or early life, though medieval writers agree that she was of high birth. She is remembered principally as the mother of Saint Edith of Wilton and as a consort of King Edgar, who reigned over the English from 959 to 975. The main account of her life was composed by Goscelin of Saint-Bertin, a Flemish monk writing at Wilton in the late eleventh century, and is supplemented by notices in William of Malmesbury and later monastic authors. These texts, produced well after her death and shaped by the interests of her community, must be read with caution.

According to the tradition preserved at Wilton, Wulfthryth was living at the abbey, either as a young noblewoman receiving an education or as a novice, when King Edgar took her from the house. Medieval authors already disagreed over whether she had taken monastic vows, a question of consequence because the seizure of a professed nun would have been a serious offence in both canon and royal law. She bore Edgar a daughter, Edith (Eadgyth), probably in the early 960s. After a period associated with the royal household, Wulfthryth returned to Wilton with the child. Later legend held that Saint Dunstan imposed a seven-year penance on the king for the episode; modern historians regard that story as doubtful. Whether Wulfthryth and Edgar contracted a recognized marriage remains disputed. Some medieval lists of English royal consorts include her, while other writers treat the union as irregular or temporary. Their daughter was nonetheless acknowledged as of royal blood and was raised at Wilton.

Wulfthryth subsequently became abbess of Wilton, one of the leading nunneries of late Anglo-Saxon England and a house closely connected with the West Saxon royal family. In the era of the tenth-century monastic reform the community followed Benedictine observance. As abbess, Wulfthryth was credited with piety and with the recovery of relics, including those of the seventh-century saint Ywi, which she is said to have ransomed after they had been carried away from the abbey. She brought up Edith within the cloister. Edith received the veil but, according to Goscelin, refused the office of abbess and died young, traditionally in 984. Wulfthryth then promoted her daughter's cult at Wilton.

Wulfthryth continued to govern the community into old age and is generally held to have died around the year 1000. She was buried at Wilton Abbey, where a local cult arose. Her feast came to be kept on 13 September. She was not the object of a formal papal canonization, a process that had not yet become the ordinary path to sainthood in the English church of her time; her veneration remained essentially local and monastic. Beyond the Wilton tradition, independent contemporary documentation of her life is scarce, and many details rest on hagiographical narrative rather than on charters or chronicles written in her own lifetime.
