Biography
Xavier Bordas i Piferrer was a Catalan Salesian religious of the early twentieth century who died as a martyr during the anticlerical persecution that accompanied the Spanish Civil War. He was born in 1914 in Sant Julià de Vilatorta, a town in the comarca of Osona in central Catalonia, Spain. Formed in the Catholic milieu of Restoration and Republican Catalonia, he entered the Salesians of Don Bosco (the Society of Saint Francis de Sales), the congregation founded by Saint John Bosco for the Christian education of the young, especially the poor and working classes. The Salesians had been established in Spain and in Catalonia since the late nineteenth century, with schools, oratories, and houses of formation. Bordas was still in the years of religious and clerical formation, not yet a figure of public office or published work, when the political crisis of the 1930s reached open war.
The Second Spanish Republic, proclaimed in 1931, brought legislation that curtailed the Church’s role in education and was followed by recurrent anticlerical violence. After the military rising of July 1936, Catalonia remained in the Republican zone. In Barcelona and its surroundings a revolutionary assault on the Catholic Church erupted: religious houses were sacked, communities were dispersed, and bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics were killed in large numbers. Young Salesians, including those not yet ordained, were among the victims. Bordas was put to death in Barcelona on 15 August 1936, at about twenty-one years of age. The Catholic Church later judged that he had been killed in odium fidei, that is, in hatred of the faith.
On 11 March 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified a large group of Catholics killed in Spain in the 1930s, among them members of the Salesian family. Xavier Bordas i Piferrer was raised to the honors of the altar in that wave of recognitions and is therefore accounted Blessed. He has not been canonized. No well-documented individual patronages of places, professions, or causes are attached to him apart from the collective memory of the Salesian martyrs of Spain and of the Catalan witnesses of the Civil War. A distinct universal feast day assigned to him alone is not securely established in standard historical notices; devotion, where it exists, is bound up with the group of beatified Salesian martyrs and with the wider Spanish martyrs of the twentieth century.
Because he died so young and left no substantial writings or public career, the recoverable biography remains short. Reliable accounts agree on his birth in Sant Julià de Vilatorta in 1914, his belonging to the Salesians of Don Bosco, his death in Barcelona in August 1936, and the Church’s subsequent recognition of his martyrdom. He belongs to the history of the Salesian presence in Catalonia and to the large company of lesser-known religious who perished in the persecution of 1936. His beatification places his name in the martyrology of the Catholic Church as one of the blessed of the Spanish Civil War.
