Biography

Short Description

Xu Guangqi (courtesy name Zixian), known after baptism as Paul Xu, was a scholar-official, mathematician, astronomer, and agronomist of late Ming China. He was born in 1562 in Shanghai, then a county seat in Songjiang Prefecture. His family was not of high hereditary rank; he advanced through the civil-service examinations, obtaining the juren degree and, in 1604, the jinshi, which opened a career in the imperial bureaucracy. Formed by Confucian classical learning, he became unusually receptive to the mathematical and astronomical knowledge brought by European missionaries and is remembered as one of the principal Chinese collaborators of the Jesuit mission.

Xu encountered Matteo Ricci in Nanjing around the turn of the seventeenth century and was baptized a Catholic in 1603, taking the name Paul. He is counted among the Three Pillars of Chinese Catholicism, together with Li Zhizao and Yang Tingyun. With Ricci he translated the first six books of Euclid’s Elements into Chinese, published as Jihe Yuanben in 1607, a landmark in the transmission of Western geometry. He later supported calendar reform at court, working with Jesuits including Sabatino de Ursis, Johann Schreck, Giacomo Rho, and Johann Adam Schall von Bell to correct the Ming astronomical system by Western methods. His most extensive original compilation, the Nongzheng Quanshu (Complete Treatise on Agricultural Administration), assembled practical knowledge of crops, irrigation, cotton and other textile plants, and famine policy; it was edited and printed after his death.

In office Xu served in the Ministry of Rites and rose to the Grand Secretariat under the Chongzhen Emperor. He argued for stronger military preparation, including Western-style artillery, amid the growing Manchu threat, and he defended the Jesuit presence when it came under attack. He remained a layman rather than a member of a religious order, was married, and had children whose descendants formed a prominent Catholic lineage in Shanghai. He died in Beijing in 1633. His remains were subsequently buried in his native district; the tomb in what is now Guangqi Park in Xujiahui, Shanghai, became a memorial site.

Xu Guangqi’s reputation rests on his dual role as a high Ming statesman and as a mediator between Chinese and European science and religion in the early seventeenth century. The Catholic Church has treated him as a candidate for eventual beatification, but he has not been beatified or canonized. Historians regard him as a central figure in the late-Ming encounter between China and the West.
