Biography

Short Description

Yaroslav of Murom is the princely name under which later Orthodox tradition identifies the holy right-believing Prince Constantine of Murom, a Rurikid ruler of the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries venerated for the Christianization of Murom. He is generally equated with Yaroslav Sviatoslavich, a son of Grand Prince Sviatoslav II Yaroslavich of Kiev (earlier prince of Chernigov). As a younger prince of the Chernigov line he obtained Murom as an appanage amid the succession settlements of the 1090s, notably after the Liubech congress. Murom, on the Oka in the territory of the Finnic Muroma, had remained largely pagan long after the baptism of Rus' under Saint Vladimir. Chronicle notices place Yaroslav at Murom from the late 1090s; he also held Chernigov briefly in the 1120s before returning to Murom, where the sources record his death in 1129.

The medieval vita, which circulated in Murom and was later taken up in all-Russian menologia, describes his arrival in a still-pagan city. He is said to have sent his son Michael ahead as envoy; the inhabitants killed the young prince. Yaroslav-Constantine then entered with his retinue, founded a church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and another dedicated to the passion-bearers Boris and Gleb, and preached among the people. A central episode relates that a hostile crowd was halted when he came forth bearing an icon of the Mother of God. The conversion of a pagan priest’s daughter and the subsequent baptism of the Muroma are presented as the fruit of princely authority, church-building, and miraculous signs. His son Theodore (Fyodor) is commemorated with him; Michael and Theodore are honored as saints of Murom together with their father. The historical prince had further issue through whom the Murom-Ryazan line continued; the hagiographical sons who die at the beginning of the mission and the chronicle sons who inherit do not match in every detail, which is why some historians treat the identification of chronicle Yaroslav with saint Constantine as probable rather than beyond all doubt. The liturgical tradition of the Russian Church has long held them to be the same person.

According to the vita, in old age the prince received the monastic tonsure and the great schema before a peaceful death in 1129. His relics, with those of Michael and Theodore, were enshrined in Murom and became the centre of a local cult. An all-Russian feast was established in the sixteenth century at the Moscow councils under Metropolitan Macarius (1547 and following), which regularized many locally venerated Russian saints. The relics are preserved at the Annunciation Monastery in Murom. Precise information about his birth, the name of his wife, and much of his early life is lacking in the chronicles and in the surviving redactions of the vita. He is remembered as one of the baptizers of the Murom land and as a type of the pious Christian prince who combined dynastic rule with missionary labour on the eastern frontier of Rus'.
