Biography

Short Description

Yaroslav Vladimirovich, later known as Yaroslav the Wise, was Grand Prince of Kiev in the first half of the eleventh century and the ruler under whom Kievan Rus' attained a high point of territorial cohesion, legal order, and Christian culture. He was a son of Vladimir Sviatoslavich, who had established Christianity as the religion of Rus' at the close of the tenth century, and is traditionally regarded as the son of Rogneda of Polotsk. A precise year of birth is not recorded in the earliest chronicles; later tradition assigned it to 978, and he is often described as having been born in Kiev. In his early career he held princely authority in the north, first at Rostov and then at Novgorod, a city whose wealth and Scandinavian connections would prove decisive in his rise.

Vladimir's death in 1015 opened a violent succession struggle. The chronicles accuse Sviatopolk, who seized Kiev, of the murder of Boris and Gleb, subsequently venerated as holy passion-bearers. Yaroslav, supported by the Novgorodians and Varangian retainers, waged a prolonged war against Sviatopolk, who at times was aided by the Polish prince Bolesław I. Yaroslav secured Kiev and is counted as grand prince from 1019, yet his brother Mstislav of Tmutarakan defeated him in the mid-1020s and forced a partition of Rus' along the Dnieper. Only after Mstislav's death in 1036 did Yaroslav rule the reunited realm alone. In that year he also won a major victory over the Pechenegs, reducing the steppe threat to Kiev for a generation.

His reign left durable institutional and artistic monuments. He is associated with the earliest form of the Russkaya Pravda, a written law code that combined princely enactments with customary law and shaped later East Slavic jurisprudence. In Kiev he sponsored the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, whose eleventh-century mosaics and frescoes survive, as well as the Golden Gate and monastic churches dedicated to Saint George and Saint Irene. He encouraged the copying and translation of books, the training of clergy, and, in 1051, the elevation of Hilarion, a native of Rus', to the metropolitan see of Kiev. Through marriage he tied his house to other Christian dynasties: he wed Ingegerd, daughter of King Olof Skötkonung of Sweden; his daughter Elizabeth married Harald Hardrada of Norway, Anastasia married Andrew I of Hungary, and Anne married Henry I of France, while sons contracted unions with Polish and Byzantine families. These connections, together with commerce along the Dnieper route, made eleventh-century Kiev a recognized court in Europe. An expedition against Constantinople in 1043, commanded by his son Vladimir of Novgorod, failed and was followed by a diplomatic settlement with Byzantium.

Toward the end of his life Yaroslav assigned Kiev to his son Iziaslav and other principalities to Sviatoslav, Vsevolod, and their brothers, a testamentary division that foreshadowed the later fragmentation of Rus'. He died on 20 February 1054 at Vyshhorod, near Kiev, and was interred in a marble sarcophagus in Saint Sophia Cathedral, which remains in place. Medieval writers praised his piety, his legislation, and his love of books, and later tradition gave him the epithet the Wise. In 2004 the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate glorified him as a saint; church-wide veneration was later affirmed in the Russian Orthodox Church. His memory is kept on 20 February. Historians continue to treat his reign as the political and cultural apogee of Kievan Rus' before the princely conflicts of the later eleventh and twelfth centuries.
