Biography

Short Description

Yosefu Nghi Kim is a figure recorded under the Wikidata identifier Q11731035. The personal name Yosefu is a form of Joseph, a baptismal name frequently given to Catholic converts and their descendants in East and Southeast Asia. The additional name elements Nghi Kim are consistent with Vietnamese naming patterns, in which a family name or middle name may be combined with a given name, although Kim is also among the most common surnames in Korea. Despite this onomastic plausibility, no entry under this exact combination of names can be securely matched to the published lists of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs or the 103 Korean Martyrs, nor to other well-documented blesseds or saints of the Catholic Church in those regions.

Catholic communities in Vietnam endured repeated waves of persecution from the seventeenth century onward, especially in the nineteenth century under the Nguyễn dynasty. Missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society and the Dominicans, together with native priests, catechists, and lay people, were among those put to death. Similar persecutions occurred in Korea from the late eighteenth century. In both countries the faithful often appear in the historical record under a Christian name paired with a local name, and the documentation that survives is sometimes fragmentary, limited to a name, a place of arrest, and a mode of execution. In the absence of a corroborating source such as a contemporary letter of a missionary, an official edict, or the acts prepared for beatification and canonization, it is not possible to reconstruct the life, ministry, or death of Yosefu Nghi Kim.

No year of birth or death, no place of origin or martyrdom, and no details of family, occupation, or religious profession have been verified from reliable historical literature. It cannot be stated whether the subject was a priest, a religious, a catechist, or a lay person, nor whether he belonged to a particular religious order. Likewise there is no attested feast day proper to this individual, no recorded patronage, and no named pope or bishop who beatified or canonized him as a distinct cause. Group commemorations exist for the Vietnamese Martyrs (24 November) and the Korean Martyrs (20 September), but associating Yosefu Nghi Kim with either group would be conjectural.

Because the popes of Rome and the patriarchs of the Eastern churches are comprehensively listed in historical sources, it can be affirmed that Yosefu Nghi Kim did not hold either of those offices. Beyond that negative statement, responsible hagiography and historiography require that all other biographical fields remain blank rather than filled by inference. Additional information may exist in local ecclesiastical archives, in Vietnamese- or Korean-language publications, or in the underlying Wikidata item, but it is not confirmed in the sources available for the present notice.
