Biography

Short Description

Yosefu Vien Dinh Dang, known in Vietnamese as Giuse Đặng Đình Viên and in English-language hagiography as Joseph Dang Dinh Vien, was a Catholic priest and martyr in nineteenth-century northern Vietnam. He was born in 1787 in the village of Quần Anh (Quần Anh Hạ), in the Nam Định region of Tonkin, then under the Nguyễn dynasty. Christianity had been present in Tonkin since the seventeenth century through the work of missionaries and Vietnamese catechists, and he was raised within that local Catholic milieu. He was ordained a priest and exercised pastoral ministry among the faithful of the north at a time when the imperial court regarded the Church as a foreign religion incompatible with Confucian order and royal authority.

The decisive persecution of his lifetime came under Emperor Minh Mạng (reigned 1820–1841). Successive edicts forbade the Christian faith, ordered missionaries expelled, and required Vietnamese Christians to recant, often by treading on a crucifix. Priests were singled out as leaders of the prohibited religion. Joseph Đặng Đình Viên continued his ministry despite the danger. He was arrested for being a priest and for refusing to apostatize. After imprisonment and condemnation under the penal practices of the Nguyễn state, he was sentenced to death.

On 21 August 1838 he was executed by beheading at the Bảy Mẫu execution ground in Sơn Tây, in northern Vietnam. His death belonged to a broader wave of executions of clergy and lay Christians during the Minh Mạng persecution. Local Catholic communities preserved his memory as a martyr, as they did for many companions who suffered in the same years. Surviving documentation of his childhood, formation, and the precise circumstances of his arrest is limited; like most of the Vietnamese martyrs, he is known chiefly from missionary reports, local tradition, and the later acts of beatification and canonization rather than from a full contemporary biography.

He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII (in the 1900 recognition of a large group of Tonkinese and Annamite martyrs) and was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II in Rome, as one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam, collectively honored as Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions. Their feast is kept on 24 November in the General Roman Calendar. The group is venerated as patrons of Vietnam. Individual details of burial and of any later translation of relics are not securely established in the sources commonly available for this martyr.
