Biography

Short Description

Saint Evodius, known in French as Évode or Yved de Rouen (Latin forms Evodus or Evodius), was a bishop of Rouen (ancient Rotomagus) in northern Gaul in the early fifth century. He appears in the traditional episcopal catalogues of the see after Victricius of Rouen and a bishop named Innocentius. No contemporary letters, inscriptions, or chronicles that name him have survived, so almost nothing can be said with certainty about his family, education, or the length of his episcopate. He belongs to the large group of poorly documented Gallic bishops whose existence is accepted because they occupy a consistent place in diocesan lists and because a later liturgical cult formed around them.

His years in office fell in a period of acute instability in Gaul. The Rhine crossing of 406–407, the usurpation of Constantine III, and the contraction of imperial administration left civic communities increasingly dependent on their bishops. Whether Evodius exercised the kind of public leadership attested for some of his better-known contemporaries cannot be demonstrated from the sources. He must be distinguished from two other figures of similar name: the first-century Evodius traditionally listed as a successor of Peter at Antioch, and Evodius of Uzalis, the African bishop and friend of Augustine of Hippo who lived at the same period but in a different province.

Later medieval tradition, drawing on episcopal catalogues rather than on fifth-century records, placed his death in the early fifth century and often assigned it the year 422. He was buried at Rouen and came to be honoured locally as a saint. In the high Middle Ages his relics, together with those of a saint named Maxima (sometimes described in later legend as his sister), were translated to the abbey of Saint-Yved at Braine, near Soissons in Picardy. The abbey church, rebuilt in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, remains one of the principal architectural monuments associated with his name and was the main centre of his cult until the French Revolution.

Devotion to Yved de Rouen never became universal. He is absent from the core notices of the Hieronymian Martyrology, no early vita is known, and he was not the object of a papal canonization process. Recognition of his sanctity therefore rests on regional episcopal and popular cultus of the kind typical for many late-antique bishops. Local calendars have commemorated him on more than one date, most often in July or October. Modern historians treat him as a historically real holder of the see of Rouen whose personal biography, beyond the fact of his episcopate and subsequent veneration, cannot be reconstructed in any detail.
