Biography

Short Description

Saint Zachary of Vienne, also known as Zacharias of Vienne (French: Zacharie de Vienne), is venerated in the Catholic Church as a bishop and martyr of the early second century. According to traditional accounts, he occupied the see of Vienne, the Roman city of Vienna Allobrogum in Gallia Narbonensis, in what is now the department of Isère in southeastern France. Vienne was a major urban center of the Allobroges and an early focus of Christianity in the Rhône valley. Later medieval catalogues of the bishops of Vienne include Zachary among the first successors of the see. A subsequent local tradition linked the origins of the church of Vienne to Saint Crescens, identified with the companion of Saint Paul named in the Second Epistle to Timothy, but that identification is not historically secure, and the earliest names on the Vienne episcopal list cannot be confirmed from contemporary second-century evidence.

The conventional date given for Zachary's martyrdom is 106, during the reign of the Emperor Trajan (98–117). Hagiographical sources describe him as having been put to death in the course of an imperial persecution of Christians. Some later narratives assert that he was of Jewish origin and had come from Palestine before his ministry in Gaul; these particulars are not found in early independent sources and are best regarded as legendary accretions. While Pliny the Younger's correspondence with Trajan around 112 documents official policy toward Christians in the provinces, no surviving second-century text specifically records a persecution or an execution of a bishop at Vienne in 106. The famous letter of the churches of Lyons and Vienne describing the martyrdoms of 177 under Marcus Aurelius attests to a well-established Christian community in the region later in the same century, which provides a plausible historical context for an earlier episcopal presence, even if Zachary himself remains otherwise undocumented.

Zachary is commemorated as a bishop and martyr in the Roman Martyrology, and his feast is kept on 6 June. His cult belongs to the ancient, pre-Congregation layer of Christian veneration: he was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the kind practiced in the later Middle Ages and after. No reliable information has been preserved about his birth, parentage, education, or the manner of his appointment as bishop. It is not known whether he was married, as some clergy of the early church were, or whether he had children. He did not belong to a religious order, institutions of that kind not yet existing in the second century. His place of burial and the later history of any relics are not securely recorded in the sources that survive.

Although almost nothing of Zachary's personal biography can be verified by the standards of modern historical criticism, he remains a representative figure of the obscure beginnings of the church in Roman Gaul. The see of Vienne would in later centuries become an influential archbishopric, and the memory of its early martyrs and bishops formed part of its ecclesiastical identity. Zachary's place in the martyrology thus reflects both the genuine antiquity of Christianity along the Rhône and the way in which later churches preserved, and sometimes elaborated, the names of their first pastors.
