Biography

Short Description

Zambdas, whose name also appears in the sources as Zabdas, Zebidas, or Zambdas, was a bishop of the Christian community of Jerusalem in the last years of the third century. Virtually everything that can be said about him with any confidence derives from the lists of bishops of Jerusalem preserved by Eusebius of Caesarea and by later ecclesiastical historians and chroniclers. Those lists place Zambdas immediately after Hymenaeus and immediately before Hermon. Modern reconstructions of the chronology, which remain approximate, assign his episcopate to the years around 298 to 300. No contemporary document records his origin, his earlier career, or any act of his administration.

The church that Zambdas led was the church of Aelia Capitolina, the Roman colony established by the emperor Hadrian on the site of Jerusalem after the suppression of the Bar Kokhba revolt in the 130s. From the mid-second century the bishops of this community were drawn from the Gentile rather than the Jewish-Christian population. Although the see claimed apostolic foundation through James the brother of the Lord, its rank among the churches of Palestine was still evolving. Caesarea Maritima, the civil capital of the province, held metropolitan rights, and Jerusalem would not be recognized as a patriarchal see until the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Later Orthodox succession lists nevertheless include Zambdas among the patriarchs of Jerusalem, treating the episcopal line as continuous with the later patriarchate.

Zambdas’s short tenure occurred on the eve of the Great Persecution initiated by Diocletian in 303. Some medieval martyrologies and a number of modern Catholic compilations give 304 as the year of his death and imply that he may have been a victim of that persecution. The early Palestinian historian Eusebius, however, who devoted considerable attention to the martyrs of Palestine, does not name Zambdas among them. The date and circumstances of his death therefore remain uncertain. He was succeeded by Hermon, who occupied the see through the years of persecution and into the reign of Constantine.

In the Latin liturgical tradition Zambdas is honored as a saint. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 19 February with the simple notice of a bishop of Jerusalem. He has not acquired a developed hagiographical legend, nor is he the patron of any particular place, profession, or cause that can be documented. No writings are attributed to him, and the location of his burial is unknown. His historical significance lies solely in his place within the unbroken succession of the Church of Jerusalem at a moment when that church was about to pass from the relative peace of the late third century into the last and most severe of the imperial persecutions.
