Biography

Short Description

Zdislava of Lemberk, also known as Zdislava Berka, was a thirteenth-century noblewoman of the Bohemian Crown lands, remembered for charity, healing, and her association with the Dominican Order. She was born in the early thirteenth century at Křižanov in Moravia, daughter of the Moravian nobleman Přibyslav of Křižanov. Traditional accounts name her mother Sibylla and sometimes describe her as a woman of foreign, possibly Mediterranean, origin who had settled in Moravia; that parentage is only partly documented and later retellings are partly legendary. Raised in a household that combined aristocratic rank with notable piety, she was said from childhood to have been drawn to prayer and care for the poor, though as a noble daughter she was destined for marriage rather than the cloister.

In her youth she married Havel of Lemberk (Gallus), a member of the Markvartici family who established a lordship in northern Bohemia and built Lemberk Castle near the town later called Jablonné v Podještědí. The couple had children, and Zdislava combined the duties of a castle lady with large-scale almsgiving. Tradition emphasizes her founding of a hospital or hospice near the castle, her personal attendance on the sick, and her sheltering of refugees and the destitute during mid-thirteenth-century unrest in Central Europe. Her generosity reportedly caused tension with her husband and household, a theme later hagiography developed into a model of persevering Christian marriage rather than withdrawal from family life.

Zdislava became a Dominican tertiary and a principal patron of the friars in northern Bohemia. She was instrumental in establishing a Dominican house and church dedicated to Saint Lawrence at Jablonné, which became the center of her cult. Medieval and early modern accounts attribute to her a gift of healing and miracles in her lifetime; later legend added more spectacular mystical favors, which historians treat with caution. She died in 1252, still relatively young, and was buried in the Dominican church at Jablonné.

Devotion to her remained largely local for centuries, concentrated at her tomb. Pope Pius X beatified her in 1907. Pope John Paul II canonized her on 21 May 1995 at Olomouc during an apostolic visit to the Czech Republic, presenting her as a model of holiness in family life and of charity toward the suffering. Her principal feast is 1 January. She is invoked as a patron of Bohemia, of those in difficult marriages, and of people ridiculed for their piety, and she remains closely associated with the basilica at Jablonné v Podještědí that now bears her name together with Saint Lawrence.
