Biography

Short Description

Zebedee was a Jewish fisherman of Galilee in the early first century, known from the New Testament as the father of the apostles James and John. His name, rendered in Greek as Zebedaios, is generally understood to derive from the Hebrew Zebadiah (Zevadyah), meaning the Lord has given, or gift of God. He appears only briefly in the Synoptic Gospels, yet those notices are sufficient to place him among the relatively prosperous working households of the lakeshore that supplied several of Jesus's first disciples. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record that James and John were in a boat with their father when Jesus called them, and that they left Zebedee in order to follow him.

The Gospel of Mark adds a detail of social and economic significance: when the sons departed, Zebedee remained in the boat with the hired servants. The presence of hired labor indicates that Zebedee was not a subsistence fisherman working alone, but the head of a small commercial operation on the Sea of Galilee, able to employ extra hands. Such family fishing businesses were typical of towns such as Capernaum and Bethsaida in the tetrarchy of Herod Antipas. The exact town of Zebedee's residence is not named in the New Testament, though the calling narratives are set in the context of Jesus's activity along the northwestern shore of the lake, in the same milieu as Simon Peter and Andrew. Beyond this occupational sketch, the canonical texts give no further account of Zebedee's own words, deeds, or later life.

Zebedee was married; the Gospels refer to the mother of the sons of Zebedee, who is depicted as a follower of Jesus and as present at the crucifixion. Christian tradition, based on a comparison of the lists of women in Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40, has long identified this woman with Salome. Some later interpreters further suggested that Salome was a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus, which would have made James and John kinsmen of Jesus, but that genealogical claim is not stated in the New Testament and remains conjectural. What is certain is that two of Zebedee's sons, James and John, belonged to the inner circle of the Twelve. James, often called James the Greater to distinguish him from James the son of Alphaeus, was put to death by Herod Agrippa I, an event dated in Acts to the early 40s of the first century. John is traditionally identified with the Beloved Disciple and with the Johannine literature, though modern scholarship debates those identifications. The Gospels do not mention other children of Zebedee by name.

After the calling of his sons, Zebedee disappears from the narrative. No New Testament passage records his death, conversion, or subsequent role in the early Christian movement, and extra-biblical Christian literature of the early centuries likewise preserves little independent tradition about him. He is remembered chiefly as the father of two leading apostles and as a representative figure of the Galilean fishing families whose livelihoods were bound to the lake. Later hagiographic calendars have sometimes included him among biblical saints, but he did not become the object of a major independent cult, nor is a universally observed feast day or a formal act of canonization associated with him in the principal Western or Eastern martyrologies in a way that can be stated with certainty.

Historically, Zebedee belongs to the Jewish population of Galilee under Herodian and Roman rule, a region of mixed villages, fishing ports, and agricultural hinterland. The brief Gospel notices about his household illustrate how the Jesus movement drew its first adherents from ordinary but not destitute families of that landscape. Beyond those notices, responsible history must remain silent: neither a year of birth nor a year of death, nor a precise birthplace or burial site, can be verified from surviving sources.
