Biography

Short Description

Saint Zenaida, also rendered Zenaïs or Zenais, is a Christian saint of the first century who is venerated jointly with her sister Philonella (Philonilla). Hagiographical tradition places their birth in Tarsus in Cilicia, the same city from which the Apostle Paul came, and describes them as blood relatives of the apostle. Certain later accounts further identify them as sisters of Saint Nicanor, numbered among the seven deacons of the early Jerusalem church. The sisters received an education that included philosophy and medicine, disciplines for which Tarsus was noted in the Roman period. They are thus among the earliest women in Christian memory to have been trained as physicians.

After their conversion to Christianity the two women left Cilicia and settled in Thessaly, in a cave in the mountainous country near the ancient city of Demetrias. There they lived an ascetic life and practiced medicine without accepting fees, earning the later title of unmercenary physicians or anargyroi. Their healing combined the medical knowledge of their day with prayer, and they are said to have attended especially to the poor who could not pay temple physicians or who had been neglected. Many of those they treated were converted from paganism, and the sisters’ cave became a place of both physical and spiritual care.

Later sources differ on the manner of their deaths. One strand of tradition reports that they were stoned by pagans hostile to their missionary work and to the decline of offerings at local shrines. Another strand states that they died peacefully after years of service. In either case they have been remembered as virgins dedicated to God. Their names appear in Eastern synaxaria, and they are commemorated on 11 October in the Orthodox liturgical calendar. Because they belong to the earliest layer of Christian hagiography, independent contemporary documentation is lacking, and the details of their lives rest on later compilations.

Nevertheless, the consistent core of the tradition—two educated women from Tarsus who practiced medicine freely among the poor of Thessaly and who combined healing with the proclamation of the Gospel—has given Zenaida and Philonella an enduring place among the holy unmercenaries. They are invoked as examples of Christian physicians and of women who exercised both professional skill and apostolic witness in the first generations of the Church.
