Biography

Short Description

Saint Zenais, whose name also appears in Latin as Zenaides and in English as Zenaida, is an early Christian figure commemorated together with her sister Philonella (or Philonilla). The Greek synaxaria and the Roman Martyrology agree that she belonged to the Christian community of Tarsus in Cilicia and that she lived in the first century. Hagiographical tradition presents the two sisters as kinswomen of the Apostle Paul, a fellow Tarsian; later notices sometimes call them his sisters, while the more careful accounts speak only of kinship. They are described as his disciples in the faith and as having received baptism in connection with his ministry. Beyond this liturgical identity, no contemporary inscription, letter, or civic record independently attests their lives, and the narrative known to later churches was assembled from local memory and homiletic tradition.

According to the Eastern accounts, Zenais and Philonella received an education at Tarsus, a city then renowned for rhetorical and philosophical schools, and were trained in medicine. They are thus remembered among the earliest women physicians in Christian tradition. Leaving Cilicia, they settled in a cave in the countryside near Demetrias in Thessaly, in the region of Mount Pelion. There they combined an eremitical, ascetic life with the unpaid treatment of the sick. Because they accepted no fees, Byzantine devotion numbered them among the Holy Unmercenaries, or Anargyroi. The same sources credit them with converting many local pagans through preaching and through charitable healing. The Western martyrology, by contrast, simply lists them at Tarsus in Cilicia without narrating a Thessalian sojourn, so the geography of their later life is not uniformly attested.

Reports of their deaths likewise diverge. Some recensions of the synaxarion state that they died peacefully after years of prayer and medical service. Other versions, stressing the hostility their conversions aroused, say that pagans stoned them, and on that basis they are sometimes titled martyrs. No year of birth or death is preserved in any reliable source, nor are the names of their parents, nor a verifiable burial site. Their feast is kept on 11 October in the Eastern Orthodox calendar and on the same date in the Roman Martyrology. They were never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine type; their cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational kind, resting on liturgical commemoration rather than a juridical process.

The historical residue is therefore modest and should not be overstated. Zenais is not associated with any later religious order, and the tradition uniformly presents her as an unmarried consecrated woman without spouse or children. She held no episcopal or patriarchal office. Precise patronage lists in the later Catholic sense are not well documented for her individually, though she is invoked with the unmercenary physicians as a healer. What can be said with caution is that first-century Cilician Christianity remembered two educated women, linked by kinship to Paul, who practiced medicine without payment and whose names entered both Greek and Latin liturgical books on 11 October. All further detail belongs to hagiography rather than to independently controllable history.
