Biography

Short Description

Zenas the Lawyer is known to history almost exclusively from a single verse in the New Testament. In the Epistle to Titus 3:13, the Apostle Paul writes to his co-worker Titus, then active on the island of Crete, instructing him to assist Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey and to see that they lack nothing. The Greek word nomikos, rendered lawyer, ordinarily designated a specialist in Jewish religious law rather than a practitioner of Roman civil jurisprudence, although later Christian writers sometimes took the title in the latter sense. The pairing with Apollos, the eloquent Alexandrian teacher mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles and in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, suggests that Zenas belonged to the circle of itinerant Christian missionaries of the mid-first century. Scripture itself supplies no further biographical data: no birthplace, no family, no account of conversion, and no record of death.

From the third century onward, ecclesiastical tradition numbered Zenas among the Seventy Apostles whom Jesus sent out according to the Gospel of Luke. Lists of these disciples compiled under the names of Hippolytus of Rome and Dorotheus of Tyre identify Zenas as bishop of Diospolis, the Palestinian city also called Lydda. A minority tradition instead assigns him the see of Lystra in Lycaonia. Neither identification can be confirmed by contemporary first-century documents; they reflect the later Church's desire to give each of the Seventy a concrete apostolic territory. Later hagiographers add that he preached the Gospel with success and ended his life in peace, without specifying martyrdom or a precise date or place of death.

The name Zenas is generally understood as a shortened or familiar form of a longer Hellenistic name such as Zenodoros. Such theophoric names were common in the Greek-speaking eastern Mediterranean and do not by themselves prove either Jewish or Gentile origin. Because the New Testament calls him a lawyer, some later popular devotion has associated him with the legal profession, yet he is not among the principal or universally recognized patron saints of lawyers in either the Eastern or Western churches.

In the liturgical life of the Eastern Orthodox Church, Zenas is commemorated on 27 September, and he is also remembered on 4 January at the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles. He occupies little or no place in the General Roman Calendar. No reliable ancient source records his year of birth or death, his place of origin, the names of any family members, or the location of his tomb. The historical Zenas therefore remains a shadowy companion of Paul, known chiefly through one brief pastoral instruction and through later, largely uncorroborated ecclesiastical traditions.
