Biography

Short Description

Saint Zeno of Verona was a fourth-century bishop of Verona in northern Italy and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and in Eastern Christian tradition. Later Veronese tradition, already recorded by a seventh-century notary named Coronato and repeated in medieval lives, holds that he was a native of Mauretania in Roman North Africa. No contemporary document gives his place or year of birth, and the African origin, while standard in hagiography and sometimes supported by features of the Latin sermons transmitted under his name, cannot be confirmed from fourth-century evidence. He is generally thought to have lived an ascetic or monastic life before his elevation to the see of Verona, which most reconstructions place in the early 360s, in the aftermath of the Arian controversies that had troubled the churches of Italy and the neighbouring provinces.

As bishop, Zeno is remembered as a preacher, a minister of baptism to converts, and an opponent of Arianism and of lingering pagan custom. A body of Latin sermons or tractates transmitted under his name is the principal historical source for his teaching. Modern scholarship generally accepts a core of about sixteen sermons as authentic, while treating other pieces in the medieval collections as doubtful or later. The genuine homilies address the rites and meaning of baptism, the moral formation of the newly baptized, fasting, virginity, and the rejection of idolatry and heresy. They portray a pastor working in a city where civic paganism and Arian influence had not disappeared, and they display a rhetorical manner that has often been compared with African Latin Christian preaching. His episcopate coincided with imperial reigns that shifted between Nicene and Arian sympathies; Verona lay in a region exposed to Gothic and court Arianism, which gives pastoral point to his anti-Arian instruction.

According to the liturgical tradition of Verona and the Roman Martyrology, Zeno died on 12 April. The year is customarily given as 371, although some historians have preferred a date nearer 380. He was buried at Verona. In later centuries his relics were enshrined in the church that became the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, a major Romanesque church of northern Italy and the centre of his cult. No contemporary biography survives. An eighth-century life and subsequent legend supplied miracle stories: Zeno as a fisherman on the Adige, as the rescuer of a drowning child, and as a protector of the city against flood. These tales, which cannot be verified from his own century, explain the familiar iconography in which he holds a fishing rod and a fish, and they underpinned his medieval popularity in the Veneto.

Zeno is the principal patron saint of Verona and is also invoked as a patron of fishermen and anglers. In some traditions he is a patron of newborn children and of infants learning to speak or to walk, associations that grew from the childhood miracles attached to his legend. His feast is kept on 12 April. Because he belongs to the age of the early church, he was never the subject of a papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult is ancient and local, later received into the wider Roman calendar. The historical figure remains accessible mainly through the authentic sermons, which show a fourth-century Italian bishop of probable North African background, devoted to baptismal instruction and to the defence of Nicene Christianity in Verona.
