Biography

Short Description

Saint Zenobius of Florence (Italian: San Zanobi or Zenobio) was a bishop of Florence in the late fourth and early fifth centuries and is venerated as a principal patron of the city. Traditional accounts, repeated in medieval vitae and by later Florentine writers such as Saint Antoninus, place his birth in Florence to a noble family that still followed pagan religion, commonly in the year 337. He is said to have been converted to Christianity against his parents' wishes and baptized by Theodore, described as bishop of Florence and as Zenobius's predecessor in that office. No contemporary record of his childhood survives; the story of his conversion belongs to hagiography rather than to documents of his own lifetime.

After entering the clergy he became bishop of Florence, holding the see in the decades around the year 400. Later tradition associates him with Saint Ambrose of Milan, who is sometimes said to have ordained him or consecrated him bishop. In a period when Nicene Christianity was being consolidated in Italy, Zenobius is portrayed as a pastor who preached, opposed remaining pagan practice and heresy, and governed the Florentine church. Legend ascribes to him miracles of healing and of raising the dead, including the restoration of a child killed in the street and of a child belonging to a traveler from beyond the Alps. These stories, written down long after his death, became the core of his legend and of Florentine civic devotion.

He died in Florence, according to the received chronology on 25 May 417, and was buried in the city. Traditions name either the basilica of San Lorenzo or the church of Santa Reparata as the original place of burial. A famous legend of a later translation of his body relates that a withered elm in the piazza before the baptistery and cathedral burst into leaf when touched by his relics. The episode was commemorated by a column in the Piazza del Duomo and was often represented in Florentine art. His relics are enshrined in the present cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, which occupies the site of Santa Reparata.

Zenobius's cult was firmly established in medieval Florence. He is a patron of the city, and his feast is kept on 25 May. Scenes from his life were painted for church and civic settings, including a well-known cycle by Sandro Botticelli. Because the principal biographical sources are late, exact dates and many personal details cannot be confirmed from fifth-century evidence, but a bishop of Florence named Zenobius in this era and an early local cult are consistent with the historical record of the see.
