Biography

Short Description

Saint Zoe of Rome is commemorated as a Christian martyr of the later third century. Almost everything that is known of her derives from the so-called Acts of Saint Sebastian, a Latin hagiographical narrative composed probably in the fifth century and widely circulated in the Middle Ages. In that account she appears as a noblewoman of the city of Rome and as the wife of Nicostratus, an official attached to the imperial administration, variously described in later retellings as a court functionary or as an officer concerned with prisoners. The legend states that for six years she had been deprived of the power of speech. She belongs, in the story, to a cluster of Roman Christians associated with Castulus, a chamberlain of the emperor Diocletian, and with Sebastian, a soldier who is portrayed as secretly encouraging the faithful and converting members of the palace circle.

According to the Acts, Zoe's speech was restored through the ministry of Sebastian. When he came to the house where she was, she prostrated herself at his feet; he signed her mouth with the cross, and she immediately spoke, giving thanks to God. The miracle is said to have led to the conversion of Nicostratus and of several companions, who received baptism from a priest named Polycarp. Thereafter Zoe and her husband are depicted as taking part in the charitable and funerary works of the Roman church, visiting prisoners and burying the bodies of those put to death for the faith. The same legendary cycle connects her with other figures of the Sebastian story, including the brothers Marcus and Marcellianus, their father Tranquillinus, and the jailer Claudius.

The narrative of her martyrdom relates that she was seized while praying at the tomb of the Apostle Peter. After imprisonment she was suspended by her hair from a tree or a beam and a smoky fire was kindled beneath her, so that she died by suffocation. Traditional martyrologies, followed by many modern calendars and reference works, assign this death to the year 286, during the reign of Diocletian. Historians treat that date, and the surrounding narrative, with caution: the great persecution under Diocletian is securely dated to 303 and the following years, and the Acts of Sebastian are regarded as a work of pious fiction rather than as a contemporary record. Nicostratus is said in the same tradition to have been martyred not long afterward, together with other members of the group.

Zoe's name entered the liturgical books of the Roman church. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 5 July, identifying her as the wife of the martyr Nicostratus and briefly describing her arrest at the tomb of Peter and her death by hanging and smoke. She has not been the object of a large independent cult, nor is a distinctive medieval shrine or a securely attested burial place associated with her in the earliest sources. Like other figures drawn from the Sebastian cycle, she was venerated among the ancient martyrs of Rome. Her recognition as a saint is of the pre-congregational kind customary for martyrs of the first centuries; no papal bull of canonization from the later medieval or modern period is attached to her name. No widely established patronage of places, professions, or causes is recorded for her in standard hagiographical directories.
