Biography

Short Description

Saint Zoe of Rome is remembered in Western hagiography as a Christian martyr associated with the city of Rome in the later third century. The principal narrative source is the Latin Passio of Saint Sebastian, a fifth-century hagiographical composition that gathers a number of Roman martyrs into a connected story. In that account Zoe is presented as a woman of high rank, the wife of Nicostratus, an official whose duties involved the custody of prisoners. For six years she had been unable to speak. When the Christian soldier Sebastian was brought into the household, Zoe fell at his feet; he traced the sign of the cross over her mouth and she immediately recovered her voice, giving thanks to God. The miracle led to the baptism of Zoe, her husband, and others of the household by a priest named Polycarp.

After their conversion the family is described as practicing charity and offering shelter to fellow Christians. During a persecution traditionally placed in the time of Diocletian and Maximian, Zoe was arrested while praying at the tomb of the Apostle Peter. She was first confined in a dark prison and afterward executed by being hung by her hair from a tree or beam while a smoky fire was kindled beneath her; she died of asphyxiation. Nicostratus and other members of the same circle were also put to death around the same period according to the same legendary cycle.

Modern historical scholarship treats the Acts of Saint Sebastian as a work of pious fiction typical of late-antique passion literature rather than as a reliable contemporary record. No independent third-century document confirms the details of Zoe’s life, the miracle of her speech, or the precise manner and date of her death. The cult of a martyr named Zoe at Rome is nevertheless ancient and is reflected in the early martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 5 July, repeating the traditional notice of her arrest at Peter’s tomb and her death by hanging and smoke.

Neither a year of birth nor a securely identified burial place has been transmitted by sources that can be regarded as historically controlled. Occasional popular devotion has associated her with afflictions of speech because of the story of her restored voice, but she has never been assigned an official patronage in the liturgical books of the Catholic Church. Her memory survives chiefly as one of the companions of Saint Sebastian within the Roman tradition of the third-century persecutions.
