Biography

Short Description

Zósimo Izquierdo Gil was a Spanish Catholic diocesan priest and martyr, born in 1895 in Villarrobledo in the province of Albacete, in the historic region of La Mancha in south-central Spain. He grew up in a traditionally Catholic rural society at the close of the nineteenth century. He entered seminary formation and was ordained to the priesthood in 1922. He remained a member of the secular clergy rather than joining a religious institute. At the time of his ministry the territory of Albacete had not yet been erected as a separate diocese (that occurred in 1949); pastoral care of the area was exercised under older jurisdictions, notably the Diocese of Cartagena. His life, like that of most country priests of his generation, left few personal papers, and later knowledge of him depends largely on diocesan records, the testimony gathered for his cause, and local memory.

After ordination he served in several parishes of the Albacete countryside, including Minaya, La Roda, and Pozo-Lorente. These were agricultural communities whose religious life centered on the parish church, the liturgical year, and catechesis. The Second Spanish Republic, proclaimed in 1931, enacted measures that restricted the public role of the Church, dissolved some religious congregations, and secularized education, intensifying conflict between Catholic and anticlerical sectors of Spanish society. Within that climate Father Izquierdo Gil continued ordinary priestly work. No substantial body of sermons, letters, or published works is commonly cited; hagiographical summaries emphasize fidelity to parish duty rather than a distinctive school of spirituality or a role in national Catholic movements.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, Albacete province fell within the Republican zone. In the first weeks of the conflict, revolutionary committees and militias closed churches and arrested clergy on a wide scale. Father Izquierdo Gil, then parish priest of Pozo-Lorente, was detained on 25 July 1936 and transferred to prison in Almansa. On 5 August 1936 he was taken out and executed by firing squad at a place called La Dehesa near Almansa. The Catholic Church subsequently judged that he was killed out of hatred for the faith. His death is one case among thousands of bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics slain in Spain between 1936 and 1939, a persecution that the Holy See has repeatedly described as among the most severe in modern European history.

The process for his beatification was joined to a large collective cause of Spanish Civil War martyrs. On 28 October 2007 Pope Benedict XVI beatified 498 of these martyrs in Saint Peter's Square; Zósimo Izquierdo Gil was among them and is therefore venerated as Blessed. He has not been canonized. His memorial is kept on 5 August, the anniversary of his death, and he is remembered in the Diocese of Albacete among its martyrs of the twentieth century. He was never married and had no children; he held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. Patronages attached to his name are not recorded in standard lists. Because he was a figure of local rather than international fame, many biographical particulars—exact family origins, the names of his parents, the place of his burial, and the full sequence of his early assignments—remain poorly documented in widely available historical literature, and it is preferable to leave those points unset rather than to conjecture.
