Biography

Short Description

Zoticus of Constantinople, known in Greek as Zotikos the Orphanotrophos (Ζωτικός ὁ Ὀρφανοτρόφος), is a Christian saint of the fourth century commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox tradition. The surviving notices of his life come from later synaxaria rather than from contemporary fourth-century documents. Those notices describe him as a Roman of noble family who belonged to the entourage of the emperor Constantine the Great. When Constantine established his new capital on the Bosporus, Zoticus is said to have left Rome for Constantinople, to have been ordained priest, and to have employed his property and court standing in the care of the city's poor.

Hagiographical tradition credits him with founding an orphanage and a hospice in Constantinople, and he received the lasting epithet of nourisher or feeder of orphans. He is portrayed as collecting abandoned children and as receiving the sick and the destitute, including, in some recensions of his legend, lepers who had been driven out or consigned to death. Medieval Byzantine memory linked his name with the great Orphanotropheion of Constantinople, a major public charitable institution of the middle Byzantine period, although historians cannot demonstrate a continuous administrative history from a fourth-century foundation by Zoticus to the later, well-attested orphanage.

A further strand of the legend places his death under Constantine's son Constantius II, whose Arianizing policy is said to have made him an enemy of the Orthodox priest. According to the passion narrative, Zoticus was bound to untamed mules or asses and dragged over the ground until he expired. A church was afterwards built at the site, and some versions mention a miraculous spring. These episodes follow the conventional patterns of martyr acts composed long after the events they purport to describe, and they are not corroborated by independent historical sources of the Constantinian or Constantian age. They do account for his being honored both as an almsgiver and as a martyr. Church calendars sometimes assign the death to about the year 340, but that figure is traditional rather than independently verified.

The Orthodox Church observes his feast on 31 December. He is regarded as a heavenly protector of orphans. Apart from this liturgical cult and the later association of his name with Constantinopolitan philanthropy, the biographical facts of Zoticus remain sparse and cannot be verified in detail. He belongs to the group of early Byzantine saints whose remembered lives illustrate the Christian ideal of organized charity in the new imperial capital, while the precise outline of his career is known only through pious tradition.
