Biography

Short Description

Saint Zoticus, known in Greek as Zotikos and often styled Zoticus the Priest or Zoticus the Orphan-Keeper (Orphanotrophos), is a Christian saint of the fourth century whose memory is preserved in Eastern Orthodox synaxaria and in the Roman Martyrology. Hagiographical tradition presents him as a Roman of noble birth who accompanied the emperor Constantine the Great when the imperial residence was established at Constantinople. Ordained to the priesthood in the new capital, he is said to have spent a large private fortune on the hungry, on widows, and especially on abandoned children. Later writers credit him with founding, or at least organizing, an orphanage and a hospice for people afflicted with leprosy, charitable works that became attached in memory to a prominent orphanotropheion in Constantinople.

The longer recensions of his Life, which appear to have been composed well after the fourth century, place him among the supporters of Nicene orthodoxy and among the friends of Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. After Constantine’s death the emperor Constantius II, whose religious policy favored the opponents of Nicaea, is portrayed as Zoticus’s persecutor. A characteristic episode relates that Constantius gave the priest a sum of gold with which to buy precious stones for the crown. Zoticus instead used the money to ransom and house lepers who were being cast out or even thrown into the sea during an epidemic. Summoned to produce the gems, he led the emperor to the sufferers and declared that these were the true jewels of the kingdom of God. The enraged ruler then ordered that Zoticus be bound to untamed mules and dragged over rocky ground until he expired. Tradition situates this martyrdom in the middle of the fourth century, but no contemporary chronicle or inscription confirms the year or the precise course of events.

A church of Saint Zoticus and an associated orphanage are attested in the later history of Constantinople, which suggests that a historical priest of that name was connected with early philanthropic institutions in the city and that a local cult developed around him. The vivid details of the mule-martyrdom and of the confrontation over living jewels, however, belong to the conventional repertoire of late antique passion literature and cannot be corroborated independently. Modern historians therefore regard the received vita as a blend of a possible fourth-century kernel with subsequent legendary expansion. Nothing reliable is known of Zoticus’s year of birth, of any marriage or children, or of the exact site of his grave, although later sources imply that he was buried at or near the charitable foundation that bore his name.

In the Byzantine rite Saint Zoticus is commemorated on 31 December, often jointly with other saints of that day. The Roman Martyrology records a Saint Zoticus, priest of Constantinople who cared for orphans, on 12 January. He is invoked as a patron of orphans and is associated more broadly with the relief of the poor and of those suffering from contagious disease. His figure thus stands at the intersection of imperial Christian philanthropy, the cult of charitable priest-martyrs, and the later liturgical memory of Constantinople.
