Biography
Zygmunt Pisarski was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the Diocese of Lublin, martyred under German occupation during the Second World War. He was born on 24 April 1902 in the village of Góra Puławska in the Lublin region, then under Russian imperial administration in the former Congress Kingdom of Poland. Raised in a Catholic rural family, he entered the diocesan seminary in Lublin and was ordained a priest in 1926. In the following years he served in pastoral assignments in the diocese and, by the 1930s, was parish priest of Dzierzkowice in the Kraśnik district, a largely agricultural community. Interwar accounts remember him as a dedicated pastor concerned with both the spiritual life of his parishioners and their material hardships.
After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, the Lublin countryside was placed under the General Government. Like many Polish clergy, Pisarski remained at his post while the occupiers targeted the Church as a pillar of Polish identity and arrested or killed large numbers of priests. He continued to celebrate the sacraments and to assist parishioners facing requisitions, forced labor, and terror. In January 1943 German gendarmes confronted him and sought information about local involvement in the Polish resistance or other opposition. Later tradition, consistent with the pattern of many wartime clerical murders in occupied Poland, holds that he refused to name or betray those under his pastoral care.
On 30 January 1943, at the age of forty, Zygmunt Pisarski was shot dead in Dzierzkowice. His killing formed part of the systematic persecution of the Polish clergy, of whom thousands were imprisoned in concentration camps or executed during the war. After 1945 his memory was kept locally as that of a pastor who had chosen fidelity to his people and his conscience rather than collaboration with the occupation authorities.
On 13 June 1999, during a papal visit to Poland, Pope John Paul II beatified Pisarski together with 107 other Polish victims of the Nazi occupation, known collectively as the 108 Blessed Polish Martyrs of the Second World War. Their liturgical memorial is observed on 12 June. Blessed Zygmunt Pisarski has not been canonized. He is venerated in the Catholic Church especially in the Diocese of Lublin and among those who commemorate the wartime martyrs of Poland.
