Biography

Short Description

Zygmunt Sajna was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Warsaw, later venerated as a martyr of the German occupation of Poland during the Second World War. He was born on 20 January 1897 in the village of Żurawica near Przemyśl, in Galicia, then part of Austria-Hungary. He received his priestly formation in Warsaw and was ordained to the priesthood on 14 June 1924. He remained a secular (diocesan) priest rather than a member of a religious order, serving under the archbishop of Warsaw in the restored Polish state after 1918.

After ordination he worked as a curate in several parishes of the archdiocese. Polish biographical notices assign him to the parish of Saint James in Warsaw from 1924 to 1926, to Góra Kalwaria from 1926 to 1931, to Wiązowna from 1931 to 1932, and again to Góra Kalwaria from 1932. In 1938 he was appointed parish priest of the parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Góra Kalwaria, a town south of Warsaw. His ministry therefore unfolded in Mazovian small-town and rural settings in the last years of independent Poland before the war.

The German invasion of September 1939 placed Góra Kalwaria under occupation. The Nazi security apparatus treated the Polish clergy as part of the national leadership to be destroyed. Sajna was arrested by the Gestapo on 3 April 1940 and held in Pawiak prison in Warsaw. On 17 September 1940 he was taken with a large group of other Pawiak prisoners, including fellow priests, to the woods near Palmiry in the Kampinos Forest north of Warsaw and shot in a secret mass execution. The Palmiry killings, carried out between late 1939 and 1941, claimed on the order of two thousand victims from among Polish politicians, intellectuals, and clergy.

After the war the mass graves at Palmiry were opened and the remains, including Sajna’s, were reburied in a cemetery established at the site, which became a place of Polish national remembrance. On 13 June 1999 Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw together with 107 other Polish victims of the 1939–1945 occupation, the group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 12 June. Sajna has not been canonized, and no distinct individual patronages are widely attached to his name beyond his place among the wartime martyrs of Poland.
